hey guys, i bought a b4.1 and i want to race in the 17.5 stock class. i dont know which motor to buy. im stuck between revtech, tekin, and novak. thanks

I've never used Revtech, but I much prefer a smoother motor in the buggy class.

The Novaks are okay, but I head they had issues in the past (that may have been resolved).

The Tekins are powerful, but not all that smooth. I LOVED it in my SC.

I currently run Orion (the previous style with the grey can). Cool, powerful and more importantly, smooth.

I switched to a Revtech after running Novak for a long time. It was a change I should have made way before I did. Novak motors are pretty decent, but power wise, the Revtech blows it away. More power, smoother, and it runs a lot cooler.

Revtech is the best 17.5 out.

most of the people at my local track use revtech so i am going to go with revtech. team orion is to expensive. i rather go with revtech. thank you guys for the advice

Your ESC can/will have as large an effect on how the motor feels as the motor itself. When people say a Tekin motor isn't smooth, they most likely have it hooked up to a Tekin ESC which isn't normally referred to as smooth anymore. Inversely, for when someone describes an Orion motor as smooth when hooked up to the R10...

Back to the original question.
Tekin's motors are just slow w/o boost so if you'll be running blinky, avoid.
Who knows what the heck is up with Novak these days but it doesn't seem good. Just search the forum here on "Novak" and "Sensor Board."
You'll be happy with the Revtech.

The new software is worlds better than 212 was for smooth throttle and braking.

Novak motors for me in 17.5

I've been running Novak for 4 months and I'm on the fence with them. I originally got Novak because I wanted to swap out the Stators to run different classes. They seemed good at first and ran strong. But I was running my motor one day and it temped at 150 - 155*F after a 15 minute practice run. Then I went to turn on my ESC and the motor was making all kinds of weird sounds and started smoking. After turning it off and let it cool down, I inspected it and two of the three coils burnt up. So I contacted Charlie at Novak about the issue and he never heard of this problem before and I felt like he was trying to blame me. Maybe not, but that is how I felt like the conversation was going. I was a bit disappointed in the conversation as I know guys who sent in there burnt up Novak and admitted that it was there fault and they got it warrantied with no problems. I'm not a basher, and strictly race. I use to work on Electric motors myself so I'm not jack wagon with my equipment.
I have since sent it in and I'm waiting at the moment for how this will be handled.

On a second note. The sensor boards on Novak's are sensitive and can be a real PITA!! I have had them quit on my in the middle of racing. That's very frustrating!!

On a third note, I bought a 13.5 stator and it was tweaked when I got it. It never seated correctly and the terminal strips almost hit where the screws go, which would short out the motor! They are replacing the stator though.
I will say they are fast and strong motors when they are running.

Reedy sonics are real popular here and seems to be great motors. Vipers...
I race with a Tim Hethcox who runs Tekin combos and he is fast. I drove his SC10 with it and it was real smooth and fast!

So I don't think there is one clear cut motor to get. It's kind of what you have a preference for and use it.

LRP motors can and will run at over 200 degrees all day long.

I think we may have a re-match on Friday??? Honestly I will say that I ran out on Saturday and bought a Trinity D3 to run in my X-60. I didn't notice a huge improvement over the Ballistic 17.5 that I ran the heat before. Temps were almost the same. Ill run my Ballistic any day!

Fortunately, some of us have real world experience to backup our claims. I've run Tekin, LRP, and Speed Passion speedos, and a variety of motors with each. Until Tekin released their new software, LRP's SXX V1 was by far my favorite. Very smooth, and with nice, strong braking. The smoothest motors I've encountered are Orions, and Speed Passion V3s so far.

To add to your point, the brand of radio gear that you choose to run has an effect as well. When switching from Futaba to Airtronics, there was a noticeable decrease in latency.
