Default Corona CT3F / CR3D range issues?

Just installed this combo in my 3PK, I'm new to the 2.4 world.

I thought I'd test it in my (slow) electric truck before trying it in a nitro, and I'm glad I did because it literally had about 50m of range. Now I figure something must be wrong because this is ridiculously poor, my cheap AM radios are far far better than this.

I have sync'd the receiver and module, set the radio to PPM mode, and followed all the instructions. My radio has fairly fresh alkaline batteries (reading 10.5v), and the truck is running a near-new and freshly charged ni-mh pack. Not exactly the worlds greatest power sources but were more than ample on AM/FM.

The antennas on the RX are somewhat close to the ESC and battery connectors, but surely this isn't an issue? Or are they picky with this?

Same issue as this guy -

Anyone?

I've now repositioned the antennas so they both exit the RX pointing away from the rest of the ESC/Motor gear, and have picked the 'best' one of the two (from what I could tell) and routed it through the antenna tube. I've also removed the old extendable antenna from the 3PK, which appeared to make no difference anyway.

Maximum range before it drops out is still like 30m (my earlier claim of 50m was an overstatement).
