Default Beginner Electronics Inquiries...

Perhaps this post is better off in the Rookie Zone, but it fits here too... First off, I have done research here on the forums and done some google-ing, but I still need some info before I make my first purchase. Basically I'm trying to understand some of the terminology and basics that go into the electrical systems used, in order to decide which motor/esc/servo/batteries to buy.

Objective: To have fun learning about RC, bashing around in the neighborhood, and practicing driving skill on the local outdoor track. My vehicle of choice is the new TLR 22T. I dont want RTR quality components, but I also don't want high end, as I am really just a beginner. Quality, mid range is the idea.

Motor: I have learned that sensored/brushless is where I want to start, with a 13.5 T or 17.5T. I'm pretty sure 540 is the size I need, but don't know if theres anything else I should be taking into consideration. The Team Epic D3 or Tekin Redline appear to be ok for me, unless I am mistaken...What about Novak Ballistic?

ESC: here is where I am more confused. I know I need a sensored brushless ESC to go with the motor but, I'm not sure which because some take different batteries (i.e. have different input voltages). The Tekin RS gets a lot of praise, but is it more than I need at my level? It seems to only take 3S Lipo, unless I am mistaken. What about the Novak GTB2 Sportsman...

Batteries...Correct me if I'm wrong but, you only choose batteries AFTER youve chosen the ESC right? So I'm not sure if I should be aiming for 2S or 3S at the beginner level. Also, what about C rating. I saw some cheap 25C 7.4V Onyx Lipos, but is 25C enough? They are only 2S though, so unless Im missing something, they dont work with the Tekin RS ESC...

Lastly, Servos. IO was just going to get the Spektrum 6020, to go with the Spektrum DX3C I was going to get. I know I dont need High Voltage or High Torque Servos at my stage, so is this one decent for the price ($49.99).

I think that covers it, any advice you can provide, or technical information you can help me with would be really appreciated!

Looks like you are off to a good start.

Good choice, as if the 22T is anything like the 22 buggy it should be fairly durable, good consideration for starting out. Only caveat is the ST class turnout is weak at some tracks if you think you might try racing at some point.

Motor: I have learned that sensored/brushless is where I want to start, with a 13.5 T or 17.5T. Yes, 540 size motor. Any of the 3 mentioned is a solid choice IMO. Perhaps stick with ‘stock’ 17.5 if you think you might try racing soon, otherwise a 13.5 is a nice compromise for a little extra fun power without being a handful to start with.

Those are maximum voltage/cell ratings. Either will be just fine on 2S, what most run on this type of RC. And required for racing.

Batteries...Correct me if I'm wrong but, you only choose batteries AFTER youve chosen the ESC right? So I'm not sure if I should be aiming for 2S or 3S at the beginner level. Yep. Recommend sticking with the standard 2S. 25C is certainly enough for starting out. Higher C in this situation will provide a little more punch, but it’s a small difference for most, especially just starting out.

Lastly, Servos. IO was just going to get the Spektrum 6020, to go with the Spektrum DX3C I was going to get. I know I dont need High Voltage or High Torque Servos at my stage, so is this one decent for the price ($49.99).

You don’t need high voltage, that’s mostly a Nitro thing. High torque is always good for a truck. The 6020 should be fine.

I think that covers it, any advice you can provide, or technical information you can help me with would be really appreciated!

No problem, and Welcome to the insanity!
Good luck!

Dave pretty much nailed it with his post. I'd like to just wrap it up in a nice package for you:

Car: 22T

ESC: Tekin RS (great little esc that is good for beginners as a set it and forget it item and can grow with you)

Motor: 17.5 Tekin Redline (I usually try and match the motor and esc to a brand as it seems to keep things simple if you have any problems, plus its a "stock" spec and you can always get a new stator to go faster later)

Servo: The one Dave mentioned is good, I just happen to prefer Hitec and would recommend the 7965. Might be a little more but they tend to draw less power.

Batteries: Check out Gens Ace (hobbypartz.com) or Turnigy. I got some Venoms to start out with similiar specs to what you mentioned and was blown away but what a higher C rating could do. Plus they are usually alot cheaper and will last just as long (durability and run time wise) as the Duratrax.

Radio: can't fault your choice! Get what's comfortable for you.

Welcome to the hobby!

Thank you Dave and mkiiina! Your comments are the last thing I needed to go ahead and place my order. Looking forward to building my first RC! (Too bad it's -25 C outside and won't be able to use it much for about 3 months lol...
