My buddy uses the 4PL on his Baja. Super long range and the menu is super easy to get through. I turned it on and set his baja up in less 5 minutes. I m a big futaba fan....

I was in the same situation a while back. MT4 or 4PL, I doubt you'd go wrong with either they're both nice radios both with nice options. The telemetry with the MT4 is a nice option but I use a temp gun and a Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS for speed instead. The 4PL has flawless long range, backlit screen, Futaba quality can be felt when you hold and operate it. The 4ch high voltage capable Rx is $50... thats cheap for a nice Rx and the 4PL can bind to 40 of them. I put in a Hobbico LiFeSource LiFe 6.6V 1900mAh 3C battery, it fits as though it was specifically made for the 4PL. I also bought a nice bag that keeps it safe and nicely stored. These days it hard to go wrong with any radio, they're all pretty nice. The 4PL just ended up in the right price category for me, and I like showing up at the club amongst all the Spektrum hoard. Scroll down the RC Tech thread and you'll see my pics.

is the backlighting or I should say non-backlight on the MT4 that big of an issue?

I love my 4pl. I really like how the throttle trigger is nice and tight on my pointer finger, allowing precise throttle and braking inputs. I dont think it is possible to be dissapointed with this radio.
