Default Team Orion Vortex R8 Pro ESC

What's everyones opinion on these? Yes, I know its the same thing as the HobbyWing ESC... So far I'm not too happy with mine. Just got everything installed in my Mugen MBX6 ECO; both the Orion R8 Pro and Orion 2100KV. Took it out for a couple practice runs and quickly realized that something just seemed off, the buggy was lacking the explosive acceleration that you see with most 1/8E. Let it sit around before dropping into my LHS today and took it out in their parking lot well after maybe 3-4 passes trying to diagnose it the throttle starting acting up while we were checking the endpoints and then BAM the smell of nasty burning electronics. Pulled the body and immediately could tell it was the ESC. Anybody but Tebo having any luck with these?

Lacking explosive acceleration?

How's your starting power? how's your punch control? What connectors/wire gauge are you using?

Maybe you can download the software from hobbywing and use it to reprogram the esc.

Well initially I was thinking the lack of power had something to do with the Initial Punch setting but it just looks like it was a bad ESC based on what happened yesterday. It's on its way back to Horizon as we speak to get checked out, I've never smelled burning electronics like I did when we took the body off yesterday it was foul. Pretty frustrating that an ESC will burn up with about ten total minutes of run time on it.

Horizon & Orion should stand behind their new product 100%. Sorry you had this negative experience. My advice would be to get in touch with a Orion rep at horizon and have them walk you through the esc setup & to get an esc setup that th pros use. I'm pretty sure Cody King is having good results along with Tebo. If all else fails, get in contact with Team Orion Europe...they will make sure your helped out.

I had a similar issue with an R10 pro half way through my run I would lose all bottom end and orange & green light were flashing according to manual this is sensor issue so I tried a new one and I didnt have the problem until the last couple laps.

So I switched out the LRP 8.5 for a Novak 13.5 and haven't had the losing bottom end problem but it is pretty gutless I think that is a motor problem well see I really hope I don't have a speedo with issues.

It's probably more the motor than the ESC. I have run the hobbywing esc's for 2 years and they are flawless...

I don't know about hobbywing or Orion motors. I'll I will run are Tekin and have had no problems ever

I took the R8 pro out for the first time this weekend and all I can say is this thing is super smooth and the brakes are amazing! I have been using the Tekin for the last year or so and I am very glad I gave this system a try. And another thing I noticed is the motor was running about 10deg cooler and that was with a little more timing than what the Tekin had. Just sold all of Tekin backups and purchased another Orion just in case, ( lesson carried over from owning Tekin's ) but hopefully this thing will hold up.

Dang. That is what I was afraid of. I just switched both of my 1/10th scales over to the r10 (sold off my rs pro's). I was debating if I was going to switch out my rx8s....sounds like the r8 is like the r10 as far as smoothness.

I ran the R8 Pro this last weekend at the Badlands track (write up about event is on neobuggy ) and the ESC held up great except for one thing, the fan blades started to break off. It would not be that big of a deal as Tekins do the same thing but in a tekin you can access the fan and swap it out unlike the Orion which has the fan heavily gaurded. When I finally got to the fan the plastic blades and housing was very very brittle so I just removed the fan completly and opened up the case for a little more airflow ( never ran fans on the Tekin either ). But I can tell you that this thing will take a beating, the jumps were huge and I had a few "flat landers" while figuring out the layout and I am still very surprised at how smooth the throttle and brakes are. I will update how the R8 works with out the fan and if I have any other issues with the ESC. One ohter side note, if you were running the Tekin with the factory set timing you might want to go down atleast a tooth on the pinon as the Orion seems to have alittle more aggresive timing profile for sensored motors!

so it the orion is the same thing as the xerun 150A, why orion claims 180A?

I had a xerun 150A and it was great, much better than my mamba monster but in reliability nobody beats the MMM.

Can anybody post inside pics of the r8 so we can see if we found some diferences? i can post pics of a burnt xerun ehheeh
