Default esc boost vs. bigger pinion

Is there a benefit to using one over the other? Isn't the basic idea behind both the same? More boost/bigger pinion equals more top end, right?

Assuming the same motor, a properly setup boosted smaller pinion approach will nearly always have a performance advantage over a non boosted big pinion setup. Maybe not as linear of a feel which can be important, but more raw acceleration and top end performance. A properly setup boost/dynamic timing makes the motor more efficient over a much wider range of RPMS than a non boost single timing setup, widens the power band. The lower gearing helps with effective torque and acceleration too.

The far more tricky question is comparing a higher turn boosted deal to a lower turn non boost setup.

How do you figure out a properly setup boosted esc and smaller pinion? I get the temperature checking, but is there a danger in running the boost too high with a pinion too small?

Yes, it's pretty easy to over boost a lower turn motor, and also the speedo/esc can overheat. The esc can generate a lot of heat due to all of the switching involved with too low of a gear. Keep a check on that temp too.

Like most everything else it's safer to start moderate, gearing and timing, and work the settings up, keeping a check on temps and performance.

Generally I've found with boost and high turn/stock motors the gearing window is less critical though, as the power band is so wide.

Suggest asking specific questions either in the appropriate esc thread or vehicle thread if you need help with a good starting point. Or post specifics in this thread, but there is generally less traffic than the others.
