Default Newbie needs Exp Aircraft Servo help

Not directly an RC question, but surely you guys gotta know. I have a Navaid AP1 autopilot used in experimental airplanes, the aileron roll servo is missing, a replacement servo is $750+. I wonder if there is an RC equivelant that I could use. The AP1 has 3 wires that go from the autopilot head to the servo, there is a 12v pos, 12v ground, and 12v pulse. I don't know the pulse rate that operates the servo but could probably find out with some coaching. My question: Is there a 12v rc servo motor that might work? I see 12v digital servos on eBay for $40.00. I hooked an old 5v rc servo I had in a box of rc truck parts and got nothing, probably smoked the servo. Thanks in advance to all who help. UncleRap
