If the batteries are new, see how hot theyt get at 2amps when they peak. If they're not too hot to hold, that's good. They should be hot when they peak since NiMh peaks at 120-125F. If they are too hot to hold, you're potentially damaging them.
If these are older pacs, try 3amps and again see how hot they get. I run 4000mah packs, but they're older and charge them at 5amps. 5amps might be too high a rate for 3000mah packs causing them to get too hot. 3amps should take about an hour.
