Default Telemetry sensor..... reads howso?

I have the DX2S and an E-revo VXL. This has an aluminum cover over the spur, but I want to use telemetry. I was curious if the telemetry sensor was a constant beam looking for the reflection. If so, I should be able to mount it on a hole drilled in the aluminum cover to fire at the chrome sticker on the spur - even if it is in total darkness under the cover. That's fine, great infact so long as I can use it without losing my gear cover.

So does the sensor send a constant signal and can sense the reflective dot on the spur in the dark?

Here's the reason I am asking, I will have to drill the cover to mount the sensor firing into the shell.
