Lap Timing System ?
#2
Hi there, not trying to put I-laps down at all cause in the right area it is a great system, our club started with the ILaps system basically because it's cheap and affordable for a starting club and while we were running on grass or indoors it worked great, but the moment we started to operate on a dirt track where dust and mud could become an issue we noticed it would miss the odd lap or two here and there and became almost unreliable in that fashion if you understand what I mean.
Over the past few months we have been fortunate enough to borrow/lend an AMB/Mylaps system and it has been working without fault be it a perfect racing day or slightly inclement and having transponders covered in dust/mud/fuel or whatever it still seems to count the laps. Hopefully in the near future our local council will assist us in purchasing our own system (with a bit of luck), but in my view (and i'm sure the view of our club) I would spend the extra moola and buy the My laps system up front. We don't panic with the club transponders due to price $240aus is a bit expensive for a club to have ten just in case. We try to let everyone that is going to race at our track know they will need a PT or a local buisiness house actually has a few spares and will hire them at $20/day if the people so wish.
All I can say is trying to tell members that have already spent $50 on a ilaps transponder that they need to spend another $130 or so on a AMB transponder aint a lot of fun.
Like I said i'm not a huge fan of the AMB system (or MYLAPS) it's damn expensive for what you get for a start, but it seems to be the nationally recognised system (in australia at least) and often your better off just spending the money up front.
Hope all goes well for you and good luck with your decision.

From: anywhere I can race 2wd dirt, and 1/12 onroad in MI.
Like Pegsy posted, the IR types of systems are a little unreliable in true outdoor conditions. It all depends on your needs I guess. We just put in a Robitrinics scoring system on my oval.Seems to work just fine for that, but it would probally give us some problems if we were trying to run off-road with it.The robitronics set-up is nice. For under $500.00 you can set one up and get enough spare transponders to run 7 cars at once. Not too bad if your just starting out.For another 120.00 you can end up with 10 transponders and could just use them like house transponders.

We run I-Laps indoors on carpet track and is very happy with it.
For software we use zround, and that is also fantastic. We also have a projector to show laptimes and startlights. It's excellent indoor, but i guess it would be harder outdoors. But as long as it's clean, it's great, reliable and cheap.

Use Zround from http://www.zround.com/news.php.
It's easy, free and really great piece of software!
Works great with I-laps also.
