Default Technical Electronic Question

Got a question for someone smarter with electronics than I. I have an idea and want to know if it's doable or if for some reason it is not. Maybe it's been done already. Anyways, putting my pit trailer together and I bought a 300.00 HD Deepcycle battery to run the 12v stuff. What I want to do is be able to power say a tv, and maybe a light at night when the generator can't be ran. I know this can be done with an inverter but here's my question. I have a battery charger that charges the DeepCycle bat at 3 amps. It says it draws .7 amps. So I rounded that up to 1 which would be 1000 watts. The tv draws 23.7 watts and the light has 2 bulbs 40w each so another 80 watts. So less than 2000 watts total. My thought was to wire the inverter into the power box to power the lights and tv and the battery charger. So will the inverter draw more juice from the battery than the charger is replacing or would it keep a happy cycle going? Hope this makes sense.

Humm, trying to build a perpetual motion machine? It won’t work, at least not for long/the way I think you are asking, the inverter will draw more power than the charger is replacing.

The charger is drawing about 84 watts (120 VAC times 0.7 amps), but only delivering about 41.4 watts (~13.8 VDC times 3 amps). Plus the TV and lights, it’s a losing proposition.

Suggest just using the inverter to power the TV and lights, add another battery if the one is not enough. Going by your values I’m guessing you are already using fluorescent lights and a LCD TV for lower power drain?

Yes, fluorescent lights and lcd. Here is the battery I am using.

I want to believe it has enough capacity to get through the few hours at night running the inverter and the charger charging enough not to kill the battery until I fire up the generator the next day and the charger can work off the generator. Thanks!

The charger wastes more power then it replaces, due to heat loss through electrical resistance.

You are better off not using the charger, and adding another battery if possible.
