Why does the DX3r cost so much?
#1
I'm looking to upgrade from my DX3 (the original) only because I need more than a 3 model memory, I need like 10. I know nothing about the new radios.
I see the DX3s has telemetry which I think is cool (not needed), but it cost less than the DX3r. What's so special about it?
Also, will either of these new radios work with my old DSM receivers?
Thank you

Both of the radios will work with any of the older Spektrum receivers.

The screens are very close to the same size. Both have same programibility, but the 3r is much easier to program and navigate menus with.
The newer DX3S radio now come with DSM2, I've also seen a DX2/3.0 with DSM2 on it.

There are a couple reasons:
- Bigger Screen compared to a smaller screen on the DX3S
- 30 Model Memory compared to 10 Model Memory
- Faster Responce Time
- 3 Position 3rd Channel compared to only a 2 Position 3rd Channel
- And true DSM2
Yes the DX3S can now use the DSM2 receivers. The DX3S actually always used DSM2, but one controls the telemetry and the other the actual car receiver. The upgrade now make is possible for it to be used with true DSM2 receivers, but it is not as good still as the DX3R's DSM2 because the DX3S still needs to use it for telemetry. With a 3 Position 3rd Channel you can do things such as DIG control on crawlers. Bascially instead of only doing two thing with a third channel you can do three different things on the DX3R.
Both are good radios and for the everyday basher to the average racer the DX3S will be fine. But for the more serious racer or a person needing a three positon third channel the DX3R would be the better choice. Sorry if this is hard to read I am typing it on my iPhone.

In addition to the 3 position 3rd channel mentioned, the 3R has a more complete mixing capability for the 3rd channel compared to the 3S. For example if I'm not mistaken the 3S won't do mechanical brakes for a 1/8 E, the 3R will, probably other similar situations.
And the 3R can be converted to left hand, with everything needed included.

also keep in mind when radio shopping that a PRO radio is only as good as its driver. if you are a really good driver, and i mean really good, And have good digital servos with fast transit speed, you will fell a difference with a pro raido. if your just the mid pack guy or weekend basher the 3s will be just fine. even the cheaper radios have come along way. i have owned both the dx3r and i now have a dx3s.
its like golf clubs. if you suck at golf , pro clubs wont help you a bit.
