Leaving Lipo in TX?
Whats your take on this? I take mine out before I put my radio away but I may switch camps
|
I live in OK so I try not to leave anything in TX...
I have been leaving my lipo in my transmitter with no issues so far. |
Both my 3PK and 3PJS radios have had their lipos in them for almost 3 yrs with no issues. Only time they are out of the radio is for charging.
|
Don’t some radios have a small parasitic drain, for model memory and such? Thought I had seen this mentioned in some of the radio threads. Guess it would be OK as long as you routinely use and more importantly charge... but what if you don’t for a while, for a variety of possible reasons, some unexpected/unplanned? Believe most suppliers caution against even leaving a lipo plugged into the car/esc due to small parasitic drains.
|
That drain must be miniscule, I don't use my 3PJS that often and it won't drop more than 0.1v in couple of months. It gets checked routinely, I was worried about this to begine with, but not anymore.
The drain from an esc will overdischarge a lipo in far less time. |
Didn't you lose a bunch of lipos that sat for a couple of months or so? Were they plugged into anything?

I don't see any connection between these and the 3S Proteks that are sitting connected in my radio. |

Yes, I did, there were 7 lipos I lost - puffed from just sitting - were in a lipo sack, just sitting in my heated house at 68-72F. I had charged them all and then discharged 50% of label capacity like was recommended at that time. Some were new, some pretty well used (>100cycles). These were the very first lipos I owned and this was almost 4yrs ago now. They were left for 11weeks when I was in Calgary on business.

I guess I just lean towards the safe side, I rarely even charge nimh in the radio on the slight chance that something may go haywire. Which incidentally I just had happen recently with a separate AA charger that flaked out, didn't shut off. Fortunately nothing more than burnt cells and a nasty smell. But I’m glad it wasn’t in the radio. Oh, I thought you were only supposed to leave your exes in TX? ;):D |
Thanks for the input guys, I'm gonna leave mine in, I race at least once a week all year round so I shouldn't have an issue. I hope not anyway..;)
|
I just chaecked on my 3PJS and its been sitting for 3months unused with the lipo inside. Voltage is 12.0v.
Don't think you have to worry. I agree though when I was using NiMh (8 cell Sanyo pacs), I pulled them out of the radio to charge. |
I left mine in for 4 months no ill effects.
Anyone know who sells a light weight 3s lipo for a Helios EX-10. The Protek 3s 1300mah is no longer available. I'm concerned with weight not capacity Pass you soon... |
For me I prefer to disconnect the cable & leave the batt pack. Cause from what ppl told me for NiMH packs the connectors cable will change to blue. That's from batt end to the Tx.
|
For Lipo I take out to prevent any discharge which shorten batt lifespan.
