Default Charge AA's & AAA's with Hyperion

Hi guys,

This may be a stupid question, but can I use my Hyperion EOS0601 to somehow charge AA & AAA Nimh batterries used in my radio and othe items at home?

What would be the best route and how do I set the charger up to do this?

Thanks,
A

Sure hope so, I’ve done it. Set for nimh, to whatever number of cells, I use 0.5 amps for AA. Generally they can't take much or they heat up. Not sure about AAA, never tried that, maybe 0.2~0.3 amps???

Radio Shack sells various little holders for oddball around the house stuff. Generally RC transmitters have charging jacks, might need a plug/adapter. Watch out for polarity, some brands are different, JR and Spektrum I think. I usually take the batteries out for charging just to be over safe, last thing I want is to muck up a nice radio over a $1 battery issue.

I use my Accucel-6 to charge several AAs around the house. I had a wall charger for my Futaba radio, I just cut the connector off and soldered it to a deans so I can hook it up to the charger, or back to the wall charger if Im not in a hurry. I also use an old battery holder from a nitro to charge other AAs.
0.5A if Im in a hurry
0.1 if not

Thats the way I was doing it - used a 4 cell holder I made an adapter to the charger for and was charging them at 0.5 to 1amp depending on how quickly I needed them. I found an 8 cell holder on Tower and used that for the 8 AAs in my Tx before I soldered them into a pac. NiMH setting with peak set at 5mv/cell. Did an OK job.

I got into digital cams and was really using AAs. I have three 4 cell AA or AAA only chargers that were from $25 to $100. The $100 charger is a Maha cell analyzer and has charge, discharge, cycle, refresh & analyze and breakin functions. It stays busy.

For AAAs would advise no more than 0.5amp.

I use both the Energizer 2500mah AAs, and Duracell 2650mah AAs
The Energizers are older and just about dead, I have to charge them almost every 3 runs, but they have been around a long time. The Duracells last pretty long, but I have noticed a loss of capacity with fewer cycles. Next buy will be more Energizers.

The set of 2500mah Energizers I have self discharge very rapidly - a few days and have to be recharged way too often. They have a lot of voltage and capacity if you use it up in a hurry, otherwise need recharging every few days.

The best AAs I've owned are Powerex AAs by Maha. I just did a refresh and analyze sequence on my AA Analyzer and after 100 charges, these 2700s are holding 2400+mah. This is what they showed when they were new so there's been no change in 100 cycles. I suspect they were overrated capacity wise.

Ya both my Energizers and Duracells self-discharge pretty fast. When new they both held it just fine, now after a few hours they have a significant loss. I simply keep them plugged in the wall charger when not in use. It charges at 0.05A so they can stay there forever if needed. Then if they get low while Im at the track I just stick them on the Accucel and give them a boost, but I still get a good 4 hours without needing any charge at all.

There is a membrane in rechargeables thats referred to as a separator. When self discharge is high, supposedly this internal separator has failed. My Powerex's don't do this. I use sets of Powerexs in battery operated toothbrushes and they easily last a month with plenty to spare.
