Default X-Charger B6, current dropping off

Hi everyone,

I have an X-Charger B6 (http://www.rc-mushroom.com/product_i...ducts_id=18027) but I've noticed that when using the manual charge setting for my NIMH receiver pack, the current flowing into the pack will drop to 0amps every few seconds.

So if I'm charging at 0.2A, every 10 seconds or so it will drop to 0.1A, then 0.0A for about 2 seconds and then will return to 0.2A.

It's not that the receiver pack is fully charged and this is anuto-cut off feature, because it happens when the pack is discharged. Would anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Thank you!

I've seen this explained elsewhere - its the charger shutting down momentarily to see what voltage of the batt really is. As long as its charging, the charger voltage is higher than that of the batt.

And is this not bad for the battery since it's not being the inflow of current isn't consistent?

The reason I ask is that I used this charger for the 1st time to cycle a new receiver pack, and the pack failed the 1st time I used it. It would appear to be fully charged (even on another charger), but its voltage would almost immediately drop-off to around 5.5V (it's a 6V pack) when being used.

Thanks for your reply Duster.

When I connect my Hyperion 0610i to my laptop, I see it do the same thing, just not quite as often as yours is doing. I don't think that is causing probs with that rx pack.

The rx pac has another issue. Is this an older pac thats been sitting for a while? NiMH I would guess, so your charger may be false peaking. NiMHs should get hot (120-130F) when they peak. If the pac isn't getting hotwhen it charges, reset charger and charge it again. Some chargers have a peak delay that ignores an early failse peak for just this reason.

If its an older pac that s been sitting around, prob need to cycle (discharge, then charge and repeat) it a few times.

It's actually a new receiver pack (6V, 5 cell NIMH), it failed the 2nd time I used it after cycling (3 times, charging at 0.2A and discharging at 0.8A).

So I thought it might have been to do with the charging current dropping off when it was being cycled, but if that's normal then I guess that's not the reason!

Next time I'm charging I'll temp the battery and see if reaches 120F when it peaks..

I use 0.5a and 0.5amp for cycling my rx pacs with a peak setting of 5mv/cell. I'm guessing yours is false peaking being new. If its not getting noticeably hot, then its not getting charged. These pacs show quite a bit of voltage recovery when the load on the pac is removed, so its understandable that it appears to have voltage when resting but when a load is added, voltage dives and theres little to no current output.

If it doesn't get hot when charging, just repeat the charge until it does get hot.
