Stampede VXL Problem?

Just out of the blue my stampede vxl started acting up. I'm running just a NiHm battery so the light is always Red on my ESC indicating low voltage dectection is off, fine.
With the truck just sitting still and I use the steering all the way back and fourth about 3 or 4 times I lose power, totally dies. Battery pack is fully charged of course.
The ESC is throwing all kind of different light codes. Sometimes I get blinking red and green. Sometimes I get fast blinking red and sometimes blinking green.
Also I notice just when I'm trying to troubleshoot on my carpet just hardly putting around the ESC is becoming very warm, almost hot.
Sometime I can drive around in the living room for about a minute then the red light goes out on the esc and I lose all power then about 20 seconds pass and the red light comes back on as it should and I have power and can drive for maybe another minute.
I've done nothing out of the ordinary, just bashing around in the backyard like I usually do.
Does this sound like my ESC is toast to you? and if so is this common for these to fail?
Should I replace it with the original esc or get a differnt from you guys may suggest?
Thanks so much

I have a similar issue in my bandit. If I run a lipo it cuts out on low voltage. Several different lipos, all balanced, charged and working in another VXL setup.
It will run but then gets real hot real fast and cuts out.
Swapped battery to NIMH and turned off low voltage cut. Same issue, I can run the wheels in the air but when I put it on the ground If I take off super slow it will get to rolling speed ok. If I launch it, it just cuts out and does the slow red flash ie low voltage. If I push start it, it runs ok, all connections look good. I also have power to the rx and I have steering at all times..
I am going to try switching it out with my other vxl esc to see if it is motor or esc related. Just happened so I havent had time to swap it.
