i bought a novak gtb speed controller and their 10.5 brushless motor -since i'm old and most electronics scares me-- i don't know if this set-up is slow or is there a way to tweeck motor and/or speed controller-most of the guys i run against are using 19t motors but they are fast- i changed gears about ten times till i got the best i could on a stop watch-motor isn't getting hot so i think i'm not over working the motor-i am able to gain on most guys through the corners but they are much stronger down the straights-i read there are 5or 6 settings on speed controller but i can't figure out how to activate the lights they talk about and does this make the motor faster????
if you can shed any light on this i sure would appreciate it--rich

Will the ESC make your car go faster? No. The Novak GTB is a one touch programable ESC. If you don't understand the instructions on programming your ESC, you should have one of the guys at the track or shop help you. They should be able to do it for you, or at least run it down for you, so you can do it yourself.
Now on your speed problem. Best way you can get your motor up to speed it to take its temperature. By this I mean running it for 5 minutes strait, then using a Temp gun to moniter motor temperature. The motor should be in the ballpark of 160-170F. Keep gearing up till you reach that temperature range.

The other thing is to READ THE INCLUDED INSTRUCTION BOOKLET.
Too often people have trouble with some piece of electronics used in RCing, but they usually suffer from the same malady that most men do in that they never adequately read the instructions and then throw away all the assorted materials that came with whatever they bought instead of saving it for future reference.
Any further questions, or downloadable copies, of said materials can be referenced at the Novak website.
And remember the fact, that other than drag racing few races are won on the straightaway and instead won in the corners.

i have changed gears from 22- 81 to 26 -81 which seemed to improve and motor was a tad over ambeint temp so i guess my options are to put a smaller spur gear and bigger pinion till i start to get some temp or go to a novak 7.5 brushless-what mamba motor is equal to a 7.5 motor-they rate theirs in kv.-oh by the way the speed controller is set in the default position or # 1 pos-i taught i read somewhere you could advanve the the timing to get more speed-thanks rich

It might help people help you if we knew what you were racing. Also, what are you running for batteries compared to the 19t guys? Check your radio settings to make sure you are getting full throttle also.

i am running on hard packed clay almost pavement set-up-i asked around and other guys are running around 23-81-my batteries are 3300 sport packs but are well takren care of and cycled-speed don't fall off as if they are dumping-and i have plenty battery left-that's why i kept adding gear till i couldn't get adjustment anymore-BUT- i don't know if i am getting full throttle-help on this would be great

To give you an idea i raced at the weekend at carpet wars and did the usual asked around what people were geared at that had the same motor as me and got answers between 5.5 + 5.7 i tried and like you i had no problem going through the tight in field but down the straightaway i was getting murdered so i geared up a 2 teeth on the pinion 4.95 and solved the problem. It seems to me the gtb/ss combo's have bundles of torque so gear up as long as you keep an eye on the temp after 5mins you should be fine. Also check out the instruction manual some of the settings can come in handy and are quite easy to change.

If the GTB is set up correctly and your batteries are good.. you should be smoking fast! Sounds like you are probably very undergeared. Brushless motors are geared very different to brushed. The power band develops at higher rpms that it does with brushed motors.
Novak publishes a recommended final gear ratio (FDR) in their instructions. Not knowing what car you have, we can't give you the correct gears to run. You'll need a temp gauge to truely set up your car. I noticed that somebody said to get your motor to 160 to 170 degrees.. well.. that's probably too hot.. Novak says you can damage your motor at that heat. Start at the Novak's FDR and temp... it will depend a lot on your track and driving style.
Your car's manual should have the internal drive ration of the transmition. Take the spur gear you are running divided by pinion gear and multiply it by your car's internal drive ration. This will give you the FDR.
Good luck! Once you get it down.. you will almost never have to worry about it again with a brushless.
Have fun!

I was in the same boat. You gotta gear the hell out of a 10.5 BL. What are you runnin this in a car or truck..tire diameter. I'm runnin a T3 with foams, buggy tire size, gear 81/26 and motor is still under 120 deg. I'm gonna go to a 78/28.

i concur, gearing is key.
the 10.5 will be plenty fast. On my T4 when I had the 13.5 on it, I geared it close to what everyone else was, then I geared it to get the FDR that Novak suggests and the truck came to life!
