Yes, but also includes changing directions, early sensorless systems couldnt handle trying to accelerate in forward from a rolling reverse or sometimes even coasting. Basically the motor is trying to determine the rotor's position.

But the biggest bane of any brushless system is poor batteries, or connectors. Because the system is being choked off from the current it wants.
