Default NiMH charging issue

Alright well I'm using a venom 4600 7.2 6cell pack and an ICE charger. I have the settings set at 6cell 7.2v 4600 NiMH, however it delta-peaks at 3550mah. I have my peak detection set at 10mv/c, should this be changed? I'm charging at 5amps. Once this peak occurs the battery is pretty hot to the touch. Is it false peaking?

Suggest turn the peak detect down to 0 to 5mV, your probably getting the batt too hot. Sadly the 3550 might be all your going to get, especially if you have charged at 10mV several times. High capacity nimh tend to degrade fairly fast unless they are very well taken care of, equalized and such, and good cells that are well matched to begin with. One of the reasons us average Joes love lipos.

#1. I just bought these 2 4600's today, they both peak at ~3800.
#2. I own a 11.1v 20c 3s 5400 lipo, as well.

They might 'wake up' some after a couple of cycles. Just be sure to let them cool off, say a couple hours before charging again. Good Luck!

False peak would usually occur before that amount was delivered to the batt. Did you run these flat before charging? They may have had some charge in them when you charged them so you really don't know much about them yet capacity wise. My new ones typically take several cycles to show me what they are going to be like.

Some new pacs need a breakin type charge for the initial charge. Prob a little late now, def set delta peak 3 -5mv and the peak delay to 3min. Batts should not be getting too hot to hold - if they are back off charge rate. As then get few cycles on them, bump charge rate back up and see how hot they get.

I have cycled them a couple times at 10a discharge, 5mv peak charging at 4amps and they so far have maxxed out at 3666mah. Warm, but not too hot to hold. I have the discharge to 0.9v/c. GRRRRRRRR!!

Looks like you're seeing about as much as you're going to have with them.I'd email Venom and let them know you're not too pleased with their batts. Were they cheap? I bought a few Venom stick pacs a some time ago for ezstarters and etc, and they were cheap Chinese cells. I felt like I got what I paid for though and they did ok for about a year.

Unfortunately, with batts, you seem to get what you pay for.

One other idea - read the repeak part on about your Ice charger and try repeaking them to see if that generates any increase in capacity.

Okay I repeaked one of the batteries twice at 6amps and it came to about 600mah additional, the charge previous put in 3950mah.

Thats getting on up there! 4550 in a 4600 pac is not bad. Run them and see if they get better after 10-20 cycles. I bought some premium rechargeables 2700AAs and properly broke them in using a forming charge and I didn't see upper 2600s for over a dozen cycles.

Email Venom and tell them what you've been seeing and see if they have anything to say.

I've had my share of experience with Venom products. Their customer service is decent, but their products are pure utter crap.

It's not the fact that they slap a sticker across cheap electronics/batts/motors from China, it's that they have no quality control process to weed them out.

There are some decent stuff made in China these days (I emphasize decent, not good or excellent), but a distributor/re-badger have to be able to filter out the crap that in it...

I think Team Orion does the same with their product, but I have not had one failure from their goods... I think Team Orion does a better job at filtering out the defective items from the pile.

Venom doesn't seem to pick up their phone however. I tried calling them and just gave up after no one picked up. There is a rep from Venom on these boards, I forgot who it was, but he suggested that I send back a motor that was defective...

My motor was an el-cheapo $14 motor. I didn't want to spend another $5 to ship it, since that means I would've paid close to $20 for a crap motor.

I bought a similar grade motor from Team Orion, no problems. I bought another motor (with different turn) from Team Orion, same series, no problems.

If you search around, there's quite a few complaints about Venom products, especially their batteries...

Batts that sit for a long time after manufacturing are hit or miss. They lose capacity at the best. At the worst, they are way off capacity wise and have no punch. The cheapest batts I've experienced, tynergy 4200s, were a total waste of money. They never charged to more than 2500 and had no punch at all. Some got decent service from these same batts.

Think you're lucky to be seeing what you are capacity wise. Sounds like these are hit or miss type deal. they may heve ben great when they were fresh, but somewhere between here and there, its been long enough to have caused some degradation.

I think Tom's experience says it all.

Some chargers read lower and higher on mah from my experience. I have had matched packs that never went to the mah # printed on the cells. This sounds pretty normal.

well when it peaks at 3800 its pretty warm, and when i repeak it for another ~600mah its HOTTT. I should probably give it time to cool before repeaking. Thirdly it may not even matter since I need saddle packs for my b44!
