I was using this one:

http://www.meanwell.com/search/S-150/default.htm

The particular version I have is the 12V 12.5A model.

More than enough grunt to run one charger. None of the chargers I had previously complained about being run off it and I have been using it for 2 1/2 years now. Personally, I don't think that's the issue.

I don't know where you get that it needs a 30A supply. I found it says:

"To utilize the charger’s absolute maximum power capabilities the DC power source must be capable of delivering at least 15 amps of current while maintaining 12 volts DC."

I use a Pyramid 20amp powersupply PSV200. The charger in theory should only need a few amps more then your charging at. But my personal rule of thumb is double what you charge at. So 12amps if you charge at 6amps. A outragous rule of thumb i know. But basically you should not require more then a 10amp supply. The motor run in feature claims to allow 20amp output so possilby in that rare instance you may need a full 20amp power supply but im doubting..

Back when i had turbo35bl we used to draw some hard amps running motors and i only had a pyramid 15amp

Either way in the case of mine going puff i was not even drawing amps from the power supply, i was dischargin at 10amps liniar. I doubt the charger even pulled a few amps from the supply for that task

I was running mine off a 50A power supply in my motor shop when it went..... I did routinesly run it off a 23A MuchMore supply previously, but the day it died there was plenty of reserve current.

I just bought one of these new, and I wondered about the dial. Are they suppose to register a a selection with every rotational click? Mine has some definite consistent dead spots, some are 3 clicks of the dial. Just wondering if it is normal or not.

Yeah, the jog dial on the ICE is the same way. Really a poor design.

Got an email from Hobby Services saying they'd received my charger. Now I just have to wait and see what they do. Hopefully I'll get my money back. It's a shame as I really liked the charger.

Good news for me. Tower Hobbies is refunding me for the charger. I think I'll get a LRP Pulsar Competition 3 to replace it.

Well, hopefully this 'smoking' thing doesn't turn out to be a big problem. I just bought another two of these units (3 total now) to replace my 3 PitBull X3s.

If you buy it, dont modify it or do anything to it unless you want you warranty to go away.
So what kind of warranty do the chargers come with them from Checkpoint? And prolly the usual 30 day return policy from a local hobbyshop if you bought it from them.

Did you guys set your fans to Continuous or Auto when discharging?

Are you guys discharging full packs when your chargers went poof then? Cause I only plan on discharging my pack from whats left after a race and not the hole pack.

I orderd one today and the temp probe from my LHS today. So we will see how it goes then.. Im going to give it teh stress test then... Im going to use the charger for charging EP4600's, Discharge my pack out from w/e I have left after teh race at 30 amp pulse down to 1.0 per cell, then either store it like that for next week, or throw it on the Smart Tray to .9 if I have to use the pack again that day.

Ill definately keep my receipt handy from the hobbyshop!

If purchased in the US, it has a 5 year warranty. You could either send it back to Hobby Services yourself, or have the shop do it.

I had mine set on the default settings so that the fans come on automatically when needed. I was only discharging packs that had just come out the car, so were not fully charged to begin with.

You might get lucky and not have any problems. I wasn't prepared to take the risk again and asked for a refund so now I'll be buying something that if it goes, I can send back to the Australian distributor for repair.

I just want to confirm, the warranty covers the charger going bad after discharging.. right?

Have people found that if you use the 20 amp pulse instead, does it do the same thing?

Before mine went poof i was able to do the following:

20amp power supply Pyramid

-cycled 6 packs at 6amp charge and 30amp discharge pulse
-added store charge to 6packs at 1000mah.
-a week later i decided to bring the 6 packs down at 10amps liniar....... On the 3rd pack the charger went nuts and smoked.

I had set the charger fan to run all the time(like this should make any difference)

Charger has been sent back

You know what I say about all this.. When they replace your charger... they should send you 2, so when one goes,,, you can send that one back while using the 2nd one

I am still going to continue with my orderd one from the hobby shop, I wanna try it out. Maybe mine will last a life time! But i wont be discharging at 30 amps for a whole pack, just whats left after a race, fans will be set to run all the time.
