Remove set screw in pinion
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...a75c6668d2.jpg
Hello all, the set screw was broken and left the top part inside the pinion. Any idea how to take it out? Thanks |
Left handed drill bit. Should spin it right out. Only trouble is if you don't have a left handed drill bit set or know someone who does, it will cost you more to buy the drill bit than it would cost to buy a new pinion.

EZ out ,like glennhl said left handed drill bit .EZ out has drill bit on one side and the extractor bit on the other side ,.Works like a charm
|
I agree with the left-hand bit, but it would be cheaper to just buy another pinion. Chances are, you will break the bit because it is so small. OR, you will damage the threads because you got a bit that is too big and/or it does not go in the center.

I use a little dab on the tip of screwdriver, it helps with stripped screws and preventing stripped screws. I bought mine at Wal-Mart, but here is an Amazon link. https://www.amazon.com/DAP-00177-Tan...s%2C159&sr=8-2 |
Lesson learned here is invest in a micro-torch and apply heat for about 5 seconds to melt the thread lock, then remove the screw... you will never break/strip a screw ever again with this method

EZ out, Screw Extractor, Left hand drill sound like a good ideas. Only thing you purchase them in sets. Break them you mite as well purchase new pinion. I never found one that small. Brain storming! Drill grub (allen) through, smaller then 3mm, Use 2mm Allan and JB Welled into Grub screw to allan. 12- 14 hours later when dried. Use a heat gun to heat up pinion. gently unscrew allan. Good Luck!! JB Welding the allan key, Dremel off the allan screw, allan is good as new. We live and learn!! I learn not to to use loctite om my pinions.

Pinions are one of the few places (metal in metal) I never use loctite on.
|
Dont get me wrong!! There are times we use loctite, any metal to metal contact. Not on composite to composite parts. Use the Blue Loctite and heat up with soldering iron or heat gun.
|
I haven't used Loctite on a pinion is decades. However, when I did, I used the purple one. It doesn't hold as tight as the blue.

I've had grubscrews back out on my pinions during a race, so I started using purple threadlock. It's just strong enough to prevent them backing out and weak enough to let go when I need to remove the pinion. The purple magic is so good, I use it on everything that I know I won't have to undo frequently - like bulkheads and motor mounts. |
I use blue but very sparingly. Never had an issue with it getting stuck.
