Default FS-GT5 model memory question

Hi,
Just received a new GT5 transmitter (Turnigy branded). Before buying, I downloaded the manual and watched several video reviews to check its spec and features. All info I found indicated a 4 character model name could be set for each model, as did the manual that came with it. However, this one only allows 3 characters.

Is this something others have found?

If the model name is the only issue, I can deal with it but am now concerned that there may be other differences I haven't found yet.
Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

I just checked mine and it has a 4 character model name limit. When you go to a new model # on the GT5, what is the default name? On mine the default name is 4 characters, "GT5A".

Default model name is MDL on the transmitter (in the supplied manual it's GT5A).
Is yours Flysky or Turnigy branded?

I've been back to some review videos and spotted a couple with Turnigy branded GT5's that have 3 character names. Didn't spot it before as wasn't looking for it. It's annoying that even the manual that came with it says 4 characters but suppose I can live with that.
Going to have to spend some time going through all the other features/functions to see what else might be different.

I should have specified, mine is a FlySky branded model. It sounds like you've found that the Turnigy one is different. Hopefully the character limit is the only other difference :\

Thanks again for your input angrymelon.

Here in the UK the turnigy can be found quite a bit cheaper than the Flysky. Hopefully this thread will be useful for other purchasers.
Once I've got it installed in a model I'll post my findings, in the meantime this is what I know so far:

Failsafe works as expected
Crawl modes work as expected
SVC work as expected
The Turnigy GT6 works with the Flysky FS-IA6B receiver. No Gyro/SVC support.
The Flysky FS-I6X works with the Turnigy GT5 receiver (Turnigy version of FS-BS6). No Gyro/SVC support.

Assuming that the Turnigy's compatibility with receivers is the same, and you don't need a lot of channels or gyro, I found that the FlySky FS-A3 was the best bang for your buck. A while back I was able to find them for $5 a piece (they seem to be more expensive now, but still affordable). A great option if you have a lot of models, and you like to have them all RTR.

A bit of background: Years ago in my youth I had a go at RC flying. The main thing I learned was that crashing was expensive and potentially dangerous for whoever was under the plane.

Now in semi-retirement, I looked at cars and boats, got the Flysky FS-I6X and a bunch of extra IA6B receivers (they were same price as 3 ch at the time). Have scratch built a couple of boats and quite happy with the I6X, but never tried a wheel transmitter. Lots of people at the lake using them so got the GT5.

Still got an origional tamiya hornet that I could retrofit with brushless/lipo/gyro and see what happens......

I've been through the options now and as far as I can tell, the model name is the only difference but I've not tried ABS as I'll probably never use it. The Turnigy supplied manual does miss out Gyro calibration though.

The one thing I still don't really get is the Dual Rate. I'm used to a stick transmitter where you create a second response rate for a channel and assign a switch to change from one to the other. The full rate could be used at low speed, the low rate at high speed to prevent overcorrection. On the GT5 I cant see what it does for the throttle that can't be done in EPA settings. The setting for steering can be completly overridden with the switch on the side so why set in the menu as well?

Dual-rate means something different for surface radios. All it does is reduce end points on both sides equally by a %. You set EPA for both sides first. And then after driving if you want less steering travel (equal), you reduce the dual-rate.
