ESC Tuning Levels

For guys racing at club level, how much granular control do you really use on your ESC? For example, I currently run a Reedy 1000z. Drag brake can be set in increments of 5%, timing in increments of 3 degrees, power profiles, and other basic things like that. To go up to a 510R plus the program box, we're looking at $230 brand new vs $130. At what level of racing do you find that those levels of fine tuning are "Must Have"? Shaving 2/10ths off your average lap when you're already running pretty solid in the A-Mains? Racing at a regional or national level and now the brake frequency adjustment is the difference that will make or break your race days? Or is it really that the majority of racers are fine on the 1000z but want to have the pro level electronics? Something else entirely?
