D80 or XSI?

Hey guys,
I'm about to take the plunge and I was wondering if anyone had any experience/comments on/with these two DSLRs. I actually bought an alpha 200 and returned it because I wasn't satisfied with image quality. Even with some of the Minolta "legacy" lenses I have around here, I just couldn't get what I was after.
Bells and whistles don't mean much to me, I'm just looking for laser sharp images. I used to shoot with Canon/Minolta 35mm SLRs and they were always good to me. Maybe digital just isn't on par with film yet? Or maybe just not in this price range.
I know the spec differences between the two so, I'm not looking for that. Just some practical experience if anyone has had any with these 2 cameras.
At any rate, let the age old debate rage on; Canon or Nikon?

ok well, I was able to find some complete files. Raw and jpeg and kinda answered my own question. Even an $8000 dslr body with an $8000 lens won't give me the same image quality as my $80 point and shoot 35mm. Digital is more convenient, but I guess I'll just hold off for a few years and see if technology catches up with it's older brother.
