Compressor regulator for airbrush

Compressor regulator for airbrush
So I finally broke down and bought an airbrush to paint my own bodies. I have a nice 60 gallon 155 PSI air compressor. The compressor doesn't have a built in regulator, so I went to Lowes and picked up a $15 in-line pressure regulator.
No matter how I connect the lines/couplers to the regulator, it leaks air out of one side. The regulator works, I can regulate the pressure low enough, and the leak is slow enough that the compressor only re-fills every 10 minutes or so . . . but it bothers me that it leaks at all.
I've used a ton of Teflon tape and my connections are tight. One of the two connections to the regulator is a swivel type, and the air leaks out the back of the swivel mechanism. A friend of mine told me that some of the in-line regulators are meant to have a slight air leak, is this true? Or, should I take this regulator back to Lowes and exchange it for a new one?

The only time a regulator should leak is when you are backing off the pressure.
Beyond that your regulator should not leak at all.
Take it back and get a new one!
