New Paint

OUCH...I hate it when someone brings us all back to reality!!!

I was able to get some time this afternoon to paint my new HPI 1970 Boss Mustang body. It turned out pretty good I think, I like the blue. The actual blue that Ford used was a wee bit lighter. But this is Faskolor paint and I love the metallic blue they have. Deep color. Backed it with faswhite and then a light coat of black.

The rear decal is not attached yet because the shoe goo was setting in the back to attach the back bumber piece.

I decided to use liquid mask for the bumpers and I also painted the window frames on this body rather than use decals. The black stripes were going to be impossible to attach without using windex and laying them on wet. Once I did that, it wasn't too hard to do.

I've not decided yet if I want to run it or sell it. I'll beat it up pretty bad if I run it!

I'm using the RPM bumper on the front of my TC3. I dry fitted it before I painted it, and its going to fit barely if I don't put foam on it, or carve my foam down a bit. It is shorter than most I agree. If I decide to keep it, I'll post some photos on here of the mount and the finished car.

One nice thing about the HPI is that they give you two wings with it. The scale one and then a typical touring car wing too. We can't use those in VTA of course, but we can always use extra wings for our touring cars. So, that's a bonus. I thought the paint masks fit really well too. HPI is much better with having their masks actually match the body than some (Parma!).

Just finished racing the MMR Challenge in MN this weekend. Finished 1st for the event, 1st overall season points series and Concourse of the event with the new body.

Heres mine. We re starting a VTA class in Dallas. Pretty basic paint here. But its mine, so Im showing it Its a TC3 with a Novak GTB and SS25.5

It looks great, but HPI has the body side decal placed too high on the body. It should ride along the bottom edge of the door jam not above the body line as you/they have it placed.

I see what you are saying Lynn. Real photos are real photos. But...

I used HPI's guide sheet for placement of the stripes/decals. I just did some research and all the ones I find on the Mustang sites do it the same way HPI did. I was 10 in 1970. I remember the Boss Mustang then and in my teenage years for sure. I thought the "BOSS 302" was closer to the fender crest.

I think HPI got it right and the racers in your photos got it wrong. Must be that those racers repainted their cars and didn't apply the replacement decals properly? The cars below are likely factory editions.

Looks to me like the racers scooted theirs down to make room for their numerals.

Yeah, I forgot the street Bosses had the stripes up higher. A lot of the real VTA Boss cars had them lower like I posted, so no, those race cars I posted are 100% legit and are true to their era.
In fact it looks like it is about half and half with the stripes higher and lower.

I also noticed that in those photos it looks like the real factory race cars that have lower stripes also have no turn signal lights in the front or back fenders. The cars with the higher stripes do have turn signal lights appear to be street cars turned into Trans am cars.
