If you can use a set of calipers you can figure it out......
Thanks for the information.................like you mentioned before, I still have no idea where to get PICCO plugs or MEGA plugs....are MEGA plugs availble thru Serpent yet..? I don't see that on my list...

Maarten, what are the MEGA plugs parts #? Thanks

Which X12 is this? Mugen X12 or RB X12?

As far as I know, the RB X12 is based on the Novarossi RS12 and their button heads are the same as the RB V12 and Novarossi NS12/NSR12...

As for the Mugen X12, aren't they the same as the RB V12 and Novarossi NS12/NSR12? So in actual fact, you're only talking about 2 button head designs...

I was talking about Mugen X12, the buttoen is same as RS12?
I know Mugen X12 is base on (it acutally is...) NS12, but I am sure NS12 is not the same as RS12, so I was still talking about 3 different buttons.....unless they are the same again.

The Mugen X12 has identical button head as the RS12 as well as NS12 because NS12 and RS12 share the same button head.

You're right that te NS12 is not the same as the RS12 but the button head is the same. Still 2 different turbo button heads... Not 3.

Hi D,

let me see if I get this correctly from your quote

If
RB X12 = RS12 = RB V12 = NS12/NSR12 and

Mugen X12 = RB V12 = NS12/NSR12
then doesn't that means

RB X12 = Mugen X12 ???? as both same as RB V12

Sorry just confused

I thought typical engines 12 or 21 are standard 0.3mm? Or is 0.2mm like you mentioned....thanks.
Ops, you are right, Nova stock shim is 0.3mm not 0.2mm...

My Picco XP is also running with 0.3mm+0.1mm right now. I wonder how many shim is required for ZX12.

Hi Maarten,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm aware of changing the conrod after break in; not an unusual practice.

My enquiry was about the general running cost of the new Mega/Picco engines. If one has to change the conrod every 1 hour of run time after break in, this adds to the overall cost of these engines.

I've always run Novarossi engines & have found them to be robust & reliable which is what a club racer needs. The top racers can chase endlessly power at high cost.

I think the 'old' Picco engines were known for having, lets say, not the strongest conrods, what has changed with these new engines?

I think the pricing is very good BUT I'm trying to see if I can get an angle on the upkeep costs.

I saw these engines first hand at the Euro's in Luxemburg before they were officially released & they, at the very least, held their own against the MAX, JP's etc.

My questions are for the .21 & .12 race engines.

Many Thanks

Kevin
Hi Kevin,

As I mentioned, it is better save than sorry, right? The advice of changing a conrod regularly (every hour is bit overdone) is always a good idea. You don't have to be an engine Ace to see if a conrod is wearing out or not so check it yourself to prevent engine damage. As these engines are new for us, we don't have the same knowledge as we use to have from the Nova engines which we raced for many years. This will come of course, but for the moment it is also a learning curve for us. We do however trying to learn as fast as possible and giving as much feedback as possible to the user who are running these engines.

We only could test such a small number of engines from the total batch, that you're never can be sure is all the engines work as they should be.

Regards,
Maarten

Hi Speedy,

As I mentioned, the engine runs fine with the installed head shims so no need to change these. The venturi is mainly meant for controlling the fuel consumption. If you still wont get the required running time you need, try a different manifold and/or exhaust. One step at the a time though.....

Hi Maarten,

thank you for supplying the info. Before, i had no idea how to use those venturi supplied in the kit. I haven't tried others mainfiold yet as I always beleive the original mainfold come with the kit should be the best coordination. I run my RB with rb mainfold and Nova base motor with nova mainfold. However, I would try different mainfold this time.

I can already image what feature will be on MegaPicco based modified engine:
Modified head compatiable with Nova plug.
Could be, I haven't tried it myself though as the weather over here isn't cooperating at the moment. But, if I can find the time and weather, I'll try it.

The combustion chamber explanation is purely based on Michael's theory which he explained to me.

About the conrod issue....changing conrod after breakin is standard (already mentioned) but changing conrod after 1 hour of racing.....I am sure that is some individual case.....but if that is a standard practice, then MEGA engine does have a big problem.

About adding head shim.....that is depends on what % of fuel that you are using....20% or less, nothing you need to add, 25%, may be another 1mm shim, 30% fuel, 1mm shim is a must....and I think that is the only reason why ppl add or remove shims.

P.S....now I really forgot, is that 1mm or 0.1mm more shim?
0.1mm if recall correctly.....

Hi Speedy,

There is a huge difference in different exhaust combinations.

It seems that these engines, both .12 & .21 react more to different exhaust combinations than the Nova engines we use to race.
Not sure though if this is an advantage for the club racer or not....? It does give you an extra tuning possibility and it is definitely worth a try. You don't have to buy all the exhaust yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend.

After the tests this are the best combinations for the .21.

We use usually the 2018 set (new number is 203039). This set gives a very good punch (maybe too much), but top speed is a little less and fuel consumption is high. The other set, we sell is the 2002 (203014). with this set you have an excellent fuel consumption and a good top speed, but less bottom

Maarten
