It really does look like an LL3 with a uprated crank, comparing the porting to the LL3 thread it's very close, though the LL3 has more of a tear drop design on the side ports.
As much as I love the price point of this engine, and the LL3 (though the Max looks a fair bit better), I'm not sure about that idle screw design and placement, it seems to restrict the carbs ability to rotate, not a problem in some cars, but I noticed with my new MTX5 is needs the carb rotated in the direction that seems restricted on the LL3/RP3.5.

witht he mtx5 i bent my throttle linkage a bit so that i didn't need to move the carby too much.

Don't know if bending the linkage will help all that much, you physically need to rotate the carb a fair bit so the ball link will clear the tank, from the pics I have seen with the LL3 carb it does not look like it will rotate that far without the idle screw stopping it.
I would love if someone could post a pic of a LL3 carb rotated as far as possible though, as I have had an eye on a LL3 or this Max as an engine for the my first state titles later this year, both seem great value, but I'd hate to buy one and find it just won't fit easily.

this is the only photo i have, hope this help or if i have time to take some clear photo.

oh, it was a LL5 with a Max cooling head. and the other was a PT.
i just bend a little with the linkage, both same angle.
