The New Werks B5 .21 Racing Engine
#9301
Werks Racing would like to congratulate team driver Evan Vail who raced at the Force Series this weekend in Savannah, GA, USA with 250 entries.
Evan took TQ in truggy running a B5-ProII w/2058 pipe, Werks “Pro Clutch” and Werks 30% “Race Blend” fuel and qualified in 6th in buggy running a standard B6 w/2058 pipe, Werks “Pro Clutch” and Werks 30% “Race Blend” fuel.
Evan went on to take the win in truggy and was on a potential podium run in buggy but his tires faded half way through resulting in him finishing in 5th.
Another awesome showing for Evan who is proving to be one of the leaders of the new generation of young and upcoming drivers!

Congratulations to Werks team driver Evan Vail on a hard fought 4th place finish in Pro Truggy at last weekends 600+ entry Wicked Weekend! Evan used a Werks B5-Pro II engine with 2058 pipe set and Werks 30% "Race Blend" fuel to power his truggy!

Ive just opened up my b5 to give it a clean cause it's been sitting for a while and I'm planning on running it soon and noticed there is a hairline crack running along the brass from below the top rim a couple of mm from where the locater pin would sit, all the way down to one of the ports. This particular engine has done not much work at all maybe 3-4 litres incl break in. Why would this have happened? It's never been run hot and had a very easy life. Prior to it being stored it was running fine and there was no issues at all. I will upload pics shortly.

Are you sure that is a crack and not a scratch/deep score? I've never seen a cracked sleeve before.
One thing I did notice that seems to be a little unusual from looking at your pictures though is what happened to the notch that we machine into the top of the sleeve for the locator pin to fit in? We machine in a perfectly straight groove in it. In your top pictures you can see shiney edges from the top section of the groove where it looks chewed up at the top and in your lower picture it looks like the top section of the groove is completely deformed and it's about twice as wide there as the rest of the groove we machined? Did the sleeve get stuck when you were taking the engine apart and you stuck an allen wrench or something like that in the groove and used it to rock the sleeve back and forth to get it loose? Just curious as I have never seen the locator groove in a sleeve messed up like that before and being metal I would think that it would probably take quite a bit of force to do it....

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your response You posted pictures and questioned about a cracked sleeve and I'm asking a question about some things in your pictures because I'm trying to understand/figure out what happened and how it might have happened. Is that an issue?
In any case specifically my question was about what caused the damage in this area of the sleeve:
Also the reason that I asked if you were sure it was a crack and not just a scratch or deep score was because cracks in metal usually form in a straight line and what is shown in you picture is not straight.
Is there a crack also visable on the inside of the sleeve?

A quick shout out to Werks team driver Jeremy Kortz who after taking a short break from racing is back! Now running for HB and in his first race with their cars he has direct qualified into the Pro Truggy finals at this weekends "The Dirt" Nitro Challenge with his B5-Pro II powered HB Truggy running Werks "Race Blend" fuel!
