what temps are you all running yours at and also where are you temping it from?

Maximo 09-04-2009 12:09 AM

for what its worth, I would prefer an engine with great bottom and mediocre top as opposed to an engine with a mediocre bottom and a great top.... Its much harder to make a clean pass at the very end of a straight as opposed to pulling ahead out of a corner... IMO a engine is useless if its only advantage can be seen the last 10 feet of a straightaway.... having snap to clear jumps and taking the holeshot out of the corners to me is exactly what is needed in offroad........ However of course I would prefer an engine with a killer bottom and a killer top end all in one, but if I had to choose I will take bottom end over top end any day unless all I was doing was top speed runs.....

Mine runs @ 240-250, Temp from center of head,top of plug

j8ight13 09-04-2009 09:17 AM

I run OS Vspecs and was thinking about trying the Reedy out. Is it a better than a Vspec or about the same? Should I just stick with the VSPEC?

sideways88 09-04-2009 09:40 AM

mine seems to run at 280 no matter what i do. if i richen it up and get it to run at 250 - 260 it has no power on the track. only when its at 280.

i have checked my clutch and it seems fine. and i know everything on my car is fine cause my toro runs great in my car.

any one have any ideas.

I like mine, it is all preference, tons of bottom end, top end is good.I have heard of people going up a gear on bell for more top end! I would buy it again. $$ is good too.

I am assuming u checked your bell gear bearings? Each engine has its sweet spot on temp.280 seem a little hot. Although i have heard 270 is fine! As long as it makes good power and has some smoke out of the pipe. Run it! IMO Here is Brent Thielke AE Team Managers Engine setup for his Reedy v121. Hope this helps you!

Plug = O.S. P4
Head Shims = 0.50 mm
Pipe = Factory Team 2035
Restrictor = 7 mm
Fuel = Sidewinder 30% World Blend
Top End Needle = 2 1/2 Turns Out From Bottom
Bottom End Needle = 3 1/4 Turns Out From Bottom
Temp = ~250 Degrees F

then just run it at 280!! Mine runs 280-290 all the time, period. Rick Howhart has posted here before that 280 isn't a big deal for these engines. My engine has 5 gallons on it, runs great, still has good compression and has never seen under 260, not even during break in. If you run in a more hot/humid area, you won't get temps of people running in the desert, don't worry about what other peoples temps are.

I got to break mine in and run it for the first time this past weekend. Mine ran great. Odonnell plug, JP6 pipe and TQ 30% fuel. It had an excellent idle (probably the best of any engine I've owned), that will idle FOREVER... And no one pulled me down the straights. It does have more of a mellow tone at full throttle which could trick anyone into believing that it doesn't wind out. I honestly believe that engines are one of those things that you can't make a purchase on by just listening to what others have to say. I use to run O.S. engines all the time. I bought a V-spec and ran it for 10 gallons before taking it out of my buggy. I took it out because I knew that it was getting about time to go through it. It could have possibly went another 10 gallons. I never had to do any work or replace any internals on it. On the other hand, at the same time I had my V-spec every one's posting about how bearings will not last more than a gallon and they're breaking rods and it's junk, blah... blah.. blah. My point is, everyone breaks engines in differently. People run different types of fuel. People oil their filters differently. People run different pipes. People run different gearing. People have different driving styles. I could go on and on... However I do believe that anyone can get an occasional lemon. I had a plus4 and was not impressed with it at all, some people love'em and that's all they will run. I'm not gonna bash it. Maybe during break in I did something wrong. Maybe I ran it too hot. It's money I've spent so I'll probably rebuild it and try again. If it has problems the next go around then I'll make a conclusion on it's quality. Mr. Howart has been on this thread and posted that they (Reedy,Associated) would stand behind their product. That means allot to me as a consumer. With an O.S. once you bought it, it's yours. Didn't run right out of the box...oh well. But they state that when you inquire about any warranty. High end O.S.'s have no warranty. That's not bashing O.S., it's just the facts. All in all, the 121 is a great engine. Mine runs great. I wouldn't hesitate buying another. (When I save up again:D)

Have run nitro since 91 and spent alot of time tuning with Mugen Team drivers Temp meens nothing I ran a rex 3 port 1995 for 9 gallons never under 300 sold engine to a beginner who put another 3 gallons before rod broke. If you are tuning to temp you are not tuning to top performance you are tuning for preferred temp. I use temp as a base to make sure no great change in temp has happened while running a main. I am still learning this engine for tuning and have read every post here on it I believe I can make it work just need a little patience when trying new concepts. "Change is good Donkey":nod: Some will hate it some will love it some won't even try it.
I love a challenge so I'm trying it. Just my two cents Tim

The GRP did the same thing. People just couldnt understand that the motor made the best power below 200. They kept trying to tune for 230, and the motor fell on its face at that temp.
