Guys just some news on the engine .

we had an engine drop its idle on the track and had to dial the idle screw 1/2 a turn to get it back to normal and ran with no problems for the rest of the race .

Now that is because the engine has just broken temp(basically truely broken in) and thats what happens the plug goes and the engine drops idle and then you have to retune .
This only happens once in its life time not twice or three times unless you replace the sleeve and piston.

Breaking temp can happen anytime it doesn't have a planned time to happen .It could happen while breaking in ,it can happen while racing it can happen any time there is no time frame .

This happens to all engines when they are fully and truely broken in .Dont ever think that because your engine has had 10 tanks of fuel according to the engine manual that you engine is fully broken in ,your wrong if you think that.it can happen anytime and thats when it needs to be retuned.

please keep this in mind that there is nothing wrong with the engine it was just its time to break temp(actually broken in )

ps: always use the odonnell 97T if you are running turbo or the 99 if running standard dont run os plugs in this engine or anything else .

Odonnell plugs work in all engines all makes and the funny thing is they work better than the original manufacturer of other engines but other plugs just dont work in the odonnell engine might work for a while but will not give you the same reliability or performance .

KEEP THIS IN MIND ABOUT THE PLUGS .

Thanks for the info. :tire:

good call on the plugs i only ran the OD 97 med plug 30% and ran like a dream

the OD plugs are dam good and very reliable ....

i now know what you mean about the brake in and the re tune after been broken in i think this certainly happened to me over the last few days

Well...

Well I ALWAYS use O'donnell plugs......but depending on where I am racing....changes in the weather (outside/inside temp.)..... alltitude.....humidity depends on what plug I use...I hardly ever use the 99 in the non turbo heads and so far the 97T has worked great....the Tune will always pretty much need to be adjusted ....sometimes even during the same day.....I have a few of the O'donnell ss.21's and when they "drop their balls" so to speak and lossen up a bit You can feel the differance in Power......Remember to keep that air cleaner changed or clean that alone will change your tune and I haven't seen a engine yet that likes a dirty air cleaner:eek:

Its good to see real info on this thread and no arguments.

I just broke in my SS21 and OMG.. best 215 bucks I spent.

I was considering another used OS speed motor but I think I like what I bought.

question for you guys though. My HSN after little bit of tuning came in at 1 and 1/4 turns out from fully closed. that's a FULL turn less than break in. Running Odonnell 20% race with 97t plug. Even then I was running under 200 degrees doing back to back 3 second full throttle straight lines. ambient temp was about 80 degrees and 75% humidity.

anyone else want to share their setting? I have not gotten a chance to tune the low but damn.. that's sounds a bit lean. but it never flamed out and rpm just kept rising with no end in sight.

the stock Z01B and T filters are crap. You'll need to double up the outer and even then if you run in really dusty conditions you'll want to get outerwears pre filter. Odonnell filter lets' alot of dirt through.

windellmc 08-10-2009 06:10 PM

I have used the OD filters all year with no problems. Dirt does not even get past the outer filter. That is using Belray filter oil.

What filter oil are you using?

gotta disagree as well, the last two races for me were at dusty tracks and i had zero dirt infiltration with od filters, and no oil on the outer foam.

Hmmmm....I race at a few REALLY dusty tracks....LMAOOO...so dusty its hard to even see your ride...hehee..Where did it go???? Oh...there it is....kinda dusty.... and zero dust past the filter I would even say none even on the primary filter......I use Mugen filter oil and have about 20 O'donnell filters all clean and oiled in a zip lock. Have You ever tried Mugen Oil....that stuff is absolutely AWESOME.....I can say I have tried almost all......but that stuff is magic....heheeeee.

I think You had to lean it out because You are running 20% Fuel...the engines are set up to run 30% right out of the box as they are pre tuned (kinda...lol)....depending on ambient temp and humidity.....lol...You have some humidity there it looks like.

for me it gets to a point where my tune get's all messed up because how fast my filter gets dirty. I clean my filter tube as well and after a days run if I run a q-tip inside the tube it comes out black. And I go through about 2 sets of filters every 5 tanks.

particles may not be big enough to damage the engine (speed internals look fine) but I still don't trust it. Next time I run I should have the outerwears prefilter. hopefully it'll let me have longer run times on same filter

I wish modders would go at this motor and see what it can do with some porting/polishing.

BTW.. anyone know will Vspec bearings fit this motor? is it 14 x 25.4x 6?

If your running on that baseball field, you may want to invest in some 3m VetWrap to go on the outside of your filter.
