Hey guys. Im about to just finish my 2nd gallon. I would prob put 3-4 tanks of fuel in the Mil before the day was over. Sometimes 5 total in 1 day. I went thru 2 plugs in 1 half gallon. I used the 87T for about 1.5 Gallons and had 2 97T go already in the other half. Why is this happening? I went back to stock settings on Carb, and did a little tweaking. It idles and all. But seems rich still.
I am using a JP1 Pipe with 97t plug and OD 20% fuel.

We were having some problems like this at the 1st round of the Pro Series through qualifying. We would put a new plug in and in warm-up and the first 3 minutes of the qualifier everything was fine. Then all of a sudden the plug would go and the engine would die. Ended up being something going on with the fuel tank (Had been using the same tank for at least 6 months). After putting on a new fuel tank everything was good.

this last weekend I was at the track and had a pretty good tune, maybe a little rich on bottom! but the problem was, when I brought it in to get the temp.... I was running in between 270 and 290 through out the day!! the temps outside was close to 85 degrees and I am using Byrons 30/11 with a 97T. would the outside temps effect it that much? When I saw that the temps were high I richened the high about an hour and had very noticeable loss in performance so I leaned back out.
I had about 1/2 gal through the motor before the race. Is the high temps normal for this mil? I had to send this motor in for repairs under warranty and just got it back with a new piston/sleeve. I did break in by the book.
Should I be worried about the temps? or just I continue to tune for performance? Any opinions would be great!!

The pressure loss will result in not getting enough fuel flow to the engine....which means it will run exponentially leaner as the fuel level drops, and the volume of air in the tank increases.

Check the o-ring in the lid. It may not be worn and not getting a tight seal on the tank opening. Mine loosened up over time, and I had to replace it.

I never use a temp gun. I tune on trail of smoke and performance. Too many things can go wrong with temp gun and trying to tune by temp. I see to many guys take a perfectly running engine and move the needled because of some temp. I would suggest you use the "old school" method. Put a drop of water on the head or spit test. The properties of water will always be the same. Too many variables to tune by temp. Hope this helps.
One thing that you have to keep in mind when you do tune by temp: CLEAN YOUR TEMP GUN! The sensor gets dirty and throws off your reading!! And always tune with the same temp gun, as each temp gun gives different results!
Still loving my SS. Coming from OS Speed, I bought the SS just to check it out and so far it is working out excellent!! Idles like a champ, plenty of power and strong throughout the powerband with a linear powerband very similar to OS Speed!

I want to thank you all for your opinions!! I am greatly appreciative! After reading the different ideas, i realized that my buddy was using his temp gun during practice, then I used mine and got the high reading! I am using the duratrax temp gun that is about 2 years old. I think the battery is going dead! This thing had me completely confused! I think i am going to get a new one. What brand would you all recommend? I have seen alot of the Odonnell ones at the track and bunch that don't have a label, probably the really expensive ones! I am on a budget so please don't tell me the top of line expensive ones.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!

for temp guns i have and o'donnell, ofna, duratrax and an exergen... yes i use the exergen 99% of the time but when i have any doubts i use all of them to check against each other... all 4 are within 10 degree's of each other... if 1 is way higher i send it in for repair after i change the battery and recheck...
all a temp gun is for reference only... if there is smoke you are always good... no smoke then stop and richen up right away.... read the tuning bible on top of the nitro section. follow that and you will always have a good strong running engine.... jeremy

What a great motor/ pipe combo. Was running a SS .21 and JP-4 combo in my buggy and a SS .21 and JP-1 combo in my truggy. Put an R2 on both and was able to lean the buggy out 2 more hours and the truggy 3 hrs. Haven't checked runtime yet but it felt considerably longer (seat of the pants never lies LOL). Performance was increased on both before leaning them out. I'm a believer in this motor, I haven't found a better one for the money. Not even close. BTW, both of my pipes were missing the set screw for the pipe hanger, anybody else missing theirs?

I'm getting about 7:45 with my buggy and about 9:15 with my truggy with this motor and the R2 pipe on a smallish tight track with a long full throttle back stretch. Tuned sort of rich temps come off track at about 215. Pipe definately helps runtime as well as a good tune. Running 20% Byron's fuel also.
