The only reason everyone is jumpin on the "3.5 Hater Train" is because Ron Schuur, ROARS new person incharge of passing new motors and such and owner of "Schuur Speed", decided to fail the motor several months taking his new position and after he kept getting his arse handed to him. The President of ROAR is one of the higher ups of Kyosho America and ORION, ANOTHER motor company that was getting beat by TRINITY!!
Do we see a trend?
If that never happend, which BTW stands a good chance of being over turned, you'd be rushin out to get one just to keep up with the Jones's. Oh and BTW, they are talking 10's to 100's of a MM that only ONE motor has failed by, not that dramatic of a thing to make them that much faster! One other thing, A good handling car/truck makes you fast, not how much power you throw at it.

Whatever the issue with the D3.5, the fact remains that people run them and get beaten by others with older motors. If you want kV rating, then increase your mechanical timing. If you want power, then get a Reedy Sonic (190W compared to most other 17.5 motors out there with 120-130W). It's all gearing and timing. I have a D3.5 in my SC10 and a first gen Tekin Redline in my RC10, and seriously, I don't see what all of the hubub is about. It's a 17.5 motor. It spins. Whoopie.

you guys are funny. If your track runs a "bring it" 17.5 class i have a local guy that can wind you whatever you want and call it a 17.5
It will cost ya but it can be done.
The above is true!
My point, it doesn't matter who does it but if you allow motors that aren't certified by at least somebody you leave the door wide open. 17.5 means nothing unless someone certifies it as such.
I don't have a dog in your fight but think about it.

Your point is fair, but I can even take a "certified" motor and put a 6.5 turn stator in it. So by that reasoning, it doesn't matter whether it's certified. It just has to say 17.5 on the can to fool others into thinking that's what you're running (until they see you clearing quads).
There are 17.5 motors out there which are not ROAR legal yet but are otherwise a copy of a ROAR legal design (case in point - Turnigy Trackstar motors are basically a Reedy Sonic copy). Then there are 17.5 motors which used to be ROAR legal, like the D3.5. I think there's a difference between the two, and in the latter case, ROAR basically screwed up and created a gray area. Lots of people bought the D3.5 and it would be hard for a track owner to force a customer to spend another $80 on a non-banned motor. So far at least, there doesn't appear to be much or any controversy at RCHR about what 17.5 motor people ar running, and it seems to be going ok for the time being. The bigger issue, I think, is boost, and that has a far greater effect than any difference between a D3.5 and a legal 17.5 motor. Boost is not allowed in our 17.5 classes, and if we suspect somebody, then we tech them.

I know for a fact that in the past someone was running a silver/purple can Novak motor. 17.5 can and 10.5 stator. Ran it that way for a few weeks. We are going back a couple years but it is case in point. Run mod so no worries....

I plan on running both 17.5 and mod! We'll see though.
