1/8 Nitro Truggy 2 speed for bashing
#1
Hey Nitro heads! Ive always loved running the Traxxas Revo since it has a 2 speed transmission. However, the Revo doesnt take a big block easily and the drive train gets wrecked easily as well. Im craving a regular 1/8 race truggy such as a Losi 8ight t 4.0 or a Mugen Mbx7tr with a 2 speed transmission for bashing! how awesome would that be?!! Very awesome.. I have the Mugen mbx7tr nitro. Im thinking of a way to get a 2 speed in it. The only thing i can think of is using the 2 speed center diff setup that mugen has in the Mgt7. It should fit and be a blast to run in the truggy!! However....the center 2 speed diff from the Mgt7 is a solid spool....perhaps ill still play with it and see how it turns out...idk about you guys, but im amazed that there isnt already a 2 speed setup for 1/8 scale buggies and truggie!!! obviously we cant race with them, but i loveeed basshing the 2 speed revo, and bashing a 2 speed truggy with a .28 would be amazing. Nothing bashes like a truggy does, the only trucks that do have 2 speeds are big, bulky, and just dont drive as nice as a truggy. Anybody who has information on a 1/8 truggy with a 2 speed, it would be highly appreciated if you could share some information here
Perhaps somebody can give me their 2 cents and or opinion on the whole idea. Maybe we can get enough eyes to see this that a manufacturer will make a 2 speed center diff for 1/8 truggies

The main reason Truggies dont run 2 speeds - is its not legal for racing. Also you need the center diff to be able to split power, not to mention dampen the loading of the drivetrain, so that it does not take its toll on the chassis and other components.
You are right its worth a shot if thats the avenue you want to approach, yet it will also affect handling overall. Give it a shot, I am sure the GT 2 speed would be able to work. Also keep in mind that .28 will also be more aggressive on those gears of that 2 speed. Just a few thoughts to consider.

A 2-speed in a truggy would be awesome. I'd be keen to see it.. Years ago Thunder Tiger offered one for their ST-1.
Keep in mind you're posting this in a forum populated mostly by racers, so they won't be able to really get their heads around the concept, if it doesn't shave seconds off laptimes..
I would love a 2-speed in my truggy for more speed. Plus the sound of the shift is just cool.. Go for it..
I think those guys with the most experience converting to 2-speeds are the onroad GT guys. I would go ask there - in the onroad section.

I put a ofna 2 speed in my Thunder Tiger EK4. It has the Heli ringed motor in it. Had to make a wheelie bar for it due to the power. I never tested it but some on another forum with the same setup radared it going 55mph I think. It's way cool seeing and hearing it shift into 2nd while only on the rear wheels. I keep saying I'm going to get it running this summer but then things get in the way and it sits

And its not so much trying to wrap our head around the concept, as it is trying to wrap our heads around how it will affect the handeling and offer advice accordingly.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Obviously it wouldn't be competition legal and i also do a bunch of racing myself. However, i also do a lot of bashing with Truggies. Anything that blows smoke, im in love with. Im pretty sure that the mgt7 center will bolt right onto the chassis of the mbx7tr, but i think the the 2nd gear spur may touch the chassis plate, which is no biggie to fix. Like herrsavage said, just the sound of shifting sounds cool. When running a 2 speed it doesnt take that much power to be fast. My Traxxas Revo only has a o.s 18 tm in it, and that thing fly's. I couldent imagine running a 2 speed in a nice, light, and agile 1/8 truggy. The only negative i can think of is the fact that all 1/8th 2 speed setups i find are all solid spools. obviously running a solid spool wouldent have the ideal handling characteristics, however i think it would still be a blast to drive
Hopefully i come up with something to share with everybody.
