P5XLT + 2058 + Werks or Buku clutch = double the price of a 454 with everything including air filter off ebay..

For someone who doesn't plan to race..

A 454, like the vast majority of engines, is only as bad as the guy tuning it - especially for bashing.

A Novarossi is no guarantee of easy tuning. I've had one good one, and one that was awful. Not saying a P5XLT would not be better than a 454 - just that it'll cost twice as much once you get all the bits to go with it... A race engine like that is also more sensitve during break-in.. For ex. it needs - moreso than the 454 - to be preheated, a longer break-in, etc..

Don't waste $300 on some engine you don't need for bashing around the yard or a sandpit..

I would meet in the middle at 200.00 and get a P5 or B5 and know you will be happy your purchase for the money...

I don't know how happy I'd be with a P5 or a B5 for 200 bucks with a Coke can strapped to it for a pipe and no clutch...

If the OP wants to let himself get browbeaten into believing that he has to have an Italian race engine ( ..), then my advice would be to keep an eye out at Amain for if/when the RB Blast V11 goes on sale. They had the V9 in for a while, and it was on sale a bunch of times for a killer price.. (200 bucks with pipe.. Looks like the V11 will be a bit more, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it offered for $229 with pipe at some point..)
