To race at a local expert level is going to be a $5000 investment up front when you consider everything. including spares like motors and servos too.

Losi 8Tor 8B 2.0 RTR
car,engine,pipe,starter box,tx & rx 2.4,tires/wheels,servos...what am I missing? $500 - $800
sevos are crap so replace those with very good digitals $200 - $250
Use the stock tires for practice and get a new upgrade set for racing as tires are almost as important than tx,rx & servos,$50 - $100
So we are at around $750.00 - $1,150so far.
Extra battery and Battery charger NEW $50.00 - $250
Tools come with the car but you will need at least a basic set and a box or bag to make life easier $100 - $500
case of fuel (4 gallons) $125.00
So we are at $1,150 - $1,900
So $1000.00 - $2,000.00 necessary equipment and supplies for the beginning club racer
Figure 16 races per year / every other weekend for 8 month season
$15 - $30 entry per race / $240 - $480
basic collection of spare parts ,set of tires including an engine and clutch $500 - $2,000(for this you can have a complete spare car just like the primary)
So to total it up $1,890 - $6,380 depending on the details
Need to add you tranportation costs. You need food where ever you are so its not really a factor if you brown bag it.
Realisticly you could race your first season local club racing starting around $2,500.00. Your second season you won't need a bump box,rx,tx so theres some extra cash for upgrades or rebuilds.
What do you think? What did I miss?

Start punching numbers on your calculator. Be sitting down for this exersise. The sheer number of pages will offer a hint...LOL.

Honestly, if your a SMART shopper, I think you can get into the "pro/amateur" racing for about $1000-1500 easily. A good RTR race buggy like the Losi 8ight 2.0 you can pick up for around $550-575. Add another $50 for a pair of rx batteries, $75 for a decent carry case, $100 for a pair of upgraded servos, $200 for upgraded motor(not needed though as the .21 engine the Losi comes with is respectable)$25-50 for basic tools(like at Sears), another $50 for specialty tools, case of fuel and say another $100-150 in replacement/spare or optional parts. So honestly, $1000-1500 is a good estimate. You can spend even less than $1k if your really on a tight budget, or spend alot more than $1500 of course as well.

Even guys with 100% factory rides will spend more than $1000 in a few months. Think about all of the gear that is not part of their sponsorship.
It would be nice to stay under $1000 a year for tires alone.

When I first got into the hobby, I kept all my receipts in an envelope. Then my wife found the envelope and it was worse than if she were to find pics of me making out w/ another woman. (Of course, that wouldn't happen, but just an example - in case she reads this )
Needless to say, I don't keep receipts anymore, but the biggest lesson I've learned is to do your research and buy "good" first. When you buy cheaper stuff just to get by, you'll spend that much more getting the "good" stuff.

That would be a disaster!

yep, pretty strong industry.only lhs's hurt due to internet prices but i'd rather spend a little more knowing i'm helping a track stay around for me to race at.
