I saw a F1 or IndyCar driver talk about how the cars breaking apart like that helps lessen the chance for injury. Every little piece that comes off dissipates some of the kinetic energy and reduces the forces on the driver.

An F1 crash at high speeds may look scary but modern F1 cars are one of the safest place to be in.
Many head-on crashes at 200mph and the driver is unscathed..

Below is one of the worst crashes in recent years!

All that is left of the car is the bathtub chassis. Everything else is gone..

Back to the 1st video I posted, you could do that a million times and no way will the runaway tire park itself on top of the tire wall and at such a perfect alignment with the rest..

This is by far the worst crash Ive ever seen someone survive. He was badly injured however and quit racing after this, but he did survive!
