Torque VS speed in servos
BEing new to rc i just got an 8ight 2.0. I plan on running lipo for my receiver pack but im trying to understand the torque vs speed thing. I would think you want high speed for all aplications but what would e good for spped and what would be good for torque when looking at off road 1/8th scale and wherre would i put what servo?

Usually you want a good torque servo as your steering servo to move those big tires left and right, and you want a high speed servo for your throttle/brake. I have been running the Hitec 7955 for my steering and just a decent speed servo for my throttle/brake. I have used the Hitec 5955 and 7955 for just over two years with no problems. They are a little pricey, but I have had zero issues with them. In my opinion, spending a little more for servos in the beginning will save money in the long run. I have tried airtronics and cheaper JR servos before, but they ended up dying on me anyway. Another one to look at is the JR9100T, I have one in my X-ray and have had no issues with it either.

I agree with all the others except that there are plenty of servos that deliver both good torque and speed.

inmo.........torque goes up front on steering ....speed goes on throttle for the response ....alot of people including myself run the same on both ...last year i ran ace 1015's for both and it worked out great ....this year i ran jr 9100s on throttle and 9100t on steering ....you could definitely notice the difference between .05 and .15 on the speed ....if you run the 79series hitechs you dont need a regulator ..that is what im planning on running next year

Don't get too hung up on the numbers. 125-150oz torque on steering is plenty for a buggy and if you're running unregulated lipo, whatever you choose will be faster and stronger than the manufacturer's stated numbers. Just make sure the servos you choose can handle it, torched servo notwithstanding, if you cook a throttle servo at the wrong time it could take your engine with it.

I think torque is more important than speed. If you dont have the power to turn and hold the wheels it makes no difference how fast the movement is supposed to be.
If you wanna use a lipo then your best bet is to get servos that can handle then unregulated. Regulators have a high failure rate so a set-up that doesnt need one will be far more reliable.
I use a Spektrum radio and Hitec 5955 servos with a Reedy lipo unregulated. When I first went lipo I used Ace 1015 steering and 1313 throttle and frankly I thought they were so fast it made the buggy twitchy and hard to drive. Thats when I bought the 5955 servos. They have tons of torque but a little slow at 6.0v but with the lipo power they are plenty quick.

I should also add that you do need some torque on your throttle servo for the brakes. Fortunately all your good modern servos (good ones, not el cheapos) have enough but back in the day before digitals a weak servo could mean very little brakes.

Get as much servo as you can afford you will never regret having too much torque. and quality servos from JR , Airtronincs last and yo will have them for a long time. dont scrimp buy it only once..
