IMO 3 gallons is the optimal point to change bearings and rod. Unless the stock front bearing is leaking, in which case I would change them after break-in(around gallon 1). I would definately upgrade to ceramics. I use TKO's!

Is OS still making the OS speed AL head anymore? I only see the OS speed Vspec II in most the places.

I am pretty sure the Worlds edition motor replaces the standard aluminum head speed. There is also a tricked out vspec coming out with most of the speed goodies in it.

I would go with the ninja jx. It is closer to a speed than a vspec. And if you shop around you can get them for under 300.00. I got mine for 280.00

I just bought a brand new V-spec after nearly melting my JP mod v-spec. I can say, after about 1 gallon on the new one- it's strong. The low/mid range with the os 2050 pipe is awesome. I've heard mixed reviews on the lifespan of these engines, but I agree that depending on how well you take care of it, it will last atleast 8-9 gallons. Proper tuning and temps will ensure lubrication even if the pistion is not "sealed". IMO O.S. would be shooting themselves in the foot (afa reputation goes) by making an engine that barely lasts 8 gallons.

Can you buy just a rod or do you have to buy rod, sleeve and piston all together?

if you are asking me, i only have to have a rod and bearings for my ws7 but they are out of stock unless you order the piston/sleeve/ rod combo and on my ninja i need a piston and sleeve due to the dirt it sucked in when the air filter tube split.
i might just order another ws7 but after watching the pro twister mods vspecs run last week at white house it made me want to try one.

Randy-Brian does a great job with all the motors he mods. If you're looking for that Vspec type power I would give serious consideration to the PTM Ninja. They're a little more but well worth it imo. Personally, I think the JX21 is a better Vspec.
