I just received a RC8 for christmas and we gave my dad a MBX5T. How do we chose the right engines for these. The track we run on is a fairly tight technical track with some shorter straights. Is torque more important than rpm? Does the number of ports make a difference? Is a $400 engine really better than a $200 engine? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

You get a GO TECH .21 3 port race and get your pops a .21 5 port race and you will both be happy campers. And total price for both should be around $380 give or take.

If it is a short technical track like you stated then torque is more important than HP. I have had almost every type of engine out there and almost every price range and I can tell you from experience that going with the least expensive is better if you are new to nitro. Just like anything else there is a learning curve and it is better to make a mistake or two on a $200 engine then it is on a $400 engine.
For the RC8 you should consider the Novarossi N21B I had this engine and it was great. Here is a link to take a look at,

the rossi t21bf is an awesome motor... it is much easier to tune then the GO motors as far as i am concerned

Shouldn't threads like this go like: "If you don't know what to buy:"

Start with the easiest to tune and reasonably priced motors untill you "know what to buy"

+1 to the Novas above.

I'd stick to the easiest to tune and most popular motors out there, if I had to start over again.

RB S3, S5. ( the S3 is cheap too, so if your new....)
Os VZ-B
Ninja JZ-21 (the OS one, I forget if thats the right model)
Novarossi +4

I'd avoid:

GO (cheap, but not as cheap as the RB S5&3, so whats the point)
Jammin (fuel hogs, good warranty, not as easy to tune)
GRP (fragile, and Impossible to tune)

Just stick to what you know works, what is everyone else running?

I've got about 3 gallons on my Weks B3, it was a little tricky to tune at fist but once you fihure it out its pretty good.

But if i did it agian I would get teh Go Tech 3 port race motor. My brother got that one and I like it better than the Weks.

I would go with Vspecs with Dynimite 007 pipes for both. For starter boxes, I would get either a Ofna chrome top or Ofna blue truggy box and a 14.8 lipo for each.

You can get GO motors at A-main or you cn go directly to the source Racefactor industries. The GO mills arent harder to tune than any others out there.

If the purpose is for racing on a technical and tight course then you want a fuel effecient smoth engine with bottom end.
Port count never matters. ppl commonly refer to the port count as to how the engines powerband is. Its actually All timing. Ive seen 3 ports destroy 5/7/8/9 port engines.

A Ninja JX21 would likely be ideal. Jump down to smaller restrictors if taming the power down is needed and you want more fuel effeciency

Nova based engines are by far the easiest to tune. I have a Go and I love it but I'm also good at tuning. Go's are cheap in price not quality. You don't need a $400 engine to compete. Any Rb would be ideal for you being that your new. They are nova based, easy to tune and no one disputes that they will outlast practically every engine on the market.

The S3 is the cheapest about $189. Then the S5 is about $225 I actually think the S5 is the better engine. For a few dollars more you get a more rounded engine good bottom end for tight tech tracks. Nice top end for more open tracks. It's the most versatile of the S series.

Your racing a tight tech track now but as you gain skills. You will inevitably want to venture out to other tracks that are more open. The S5 will fit the bill nicely.

I would pick the Novarossi N21B, OS V-Spec or the new Novarossi Plus 21-4. These will give you enough punch and easy tuning. The RB S3/S5 will be similar also to the Novas.
