New to nitro with a used buggy. Questions
#16
Karter,
Take it from a boat guy. Don't be afraid of water, my boat engines suck in water every time they get dunked. Old fuel in the block will cause more damage than water.
When I first got into nitro it was all about taking EVERYTHING apart and figuring how it went back together. That's what makes a hobby like this so much fun.
Here is quick summary of what I do when I take in a used engine.
1. I tear the engine completely apart
2. clean, inspect (& measure, if you you plan on making changes in the future)
3. wash with a mildly agressive cleaner (Simple Green is a good example)
4. wash with water to flush cleaner out of all the corners & blind holes
5. wash with alcohol (to remove water) and place parts on a lint-free/dust free surface.
6. re-assamble using a mix of STP engine treatment and WD-40
Every used engine I rebuild gets new bearings and the famous blow test to check the block Y P/S seal after assembly.
if you want more info you can e-mail me ([email protected]) & I'll answer specific questions for you.

Hey guys what is simple green?
I see it recommended in other threads.... I figured it was a degreasing fluid but if people specifically recommend simple green what is it about that product?
PS I'm just blowing it out then using a brush and methylated spirits on the greasy bits
