Hey Tony.....Here's what I know about airport service for the race.
Brian Skinner flew into Montgomery 2 years ago and it took him all of 15 minutes from deplaning to in the truck ready to roll and about that long to check in when he left sunday. I've been there a few other times and I've never seen more than 15~20 people in the terminal. It's only about 20 minutes from the airport to the hotels at the I-65 exit where everyone stays. If I remember correctly some of the hotels offer an airport shuttle service, but it would be a good idea to confirm with whatever hotel you use. We always stay at the Holiday Inn and they have a courtesy van so I'm sure you could arrange pickup and return to the airport if you stayed there. If you plan on renting a car, it would also be a good idea to confirm what was available in Montgomery as it's a small operation so choice would be limited I'm sure.
Last year Skinny and Andrew both came into Birmingham. Andrew came in a day ahead of Brian so it worked out best by saving us a night of room fees. It was OK on the front end, but Andrew left out around 5am sunday and Brian didn't go till later that afternoon so I had to make 2 trips from the hotel to the B'ham airport to get them to their flights. It's an easy hour one way from the Birmingham airport to the hotels, so it was a long day of driving for me. Using Birmingham would require you to either make arrangements for transport south or renting a car. They have all the usual suspects in the rental biz so you should be able to get a decent deal, just figure on around 100 extra miles for the trip down and back.
If the fare is not much different to fly into Montgomery it's without a doubt the best way to go. If you can arrange transport to and from your hotel to the race venue you could use the shuttle service and save having to rent a car.
Hope this helps...
