Just in case you were wondering... those who "think" the stock motor is faster....

my fast lap was only 2/10ths faster.

It was definately faster on the straights but Marks car was faster on the infield.

That makes total sense because of the motor characteristic differences and how you have to gear a stock motor vs. a brushless motor.

I am not arguing about your stock motor being faster. What we are talking about would penalize my car also.

2/10 if a sec is huge in this type of racing!

[QUOTE=padailey;4103327]I've always thought that sounded like a pretty cool idea. I've heard 70 grams all the way up to 100 grams. Sounded like the 100 worked better if I remember right. I'll have to search and find the thread that this was discussed. However shouldn't the cars start at a somewhat equal weight before you start adding. If someones car is already 100 grams lighter adding 100 will only equal it out.

Here's a quote I found in the vintage trans am thread.
[QUOTE]
We will keep the racing competitive by using weight penalties for those racers finishing in the top 3 spots in each A main. We will require the addition of 100 grams to first place, 80 grams to second place and 60 grams to third place before competing the next race day. Those drivers will then be responsible to weigh in at their new target level at each new race day. If a racer keeps finishing in the top three at each A main their target weight will also continue to go up. These additions of weight to the top 3 finishers will continue after each race through out the year. We will use the weight penalties to keep the racing fair and close for all drivers.[QUOTE]

Followed by another from a group in Montana
[QUOTE] Good call on upping the weight penalty. If we had it to do over we'd have made the penalties larger...like close to double what they are now. I'd suggest making "housekeeping" easier by giving the same amount to 1st through 3rd though. We're five races into our championship season...JP and I are up to 300g (four penalties...we're pushing 3/4 pound now) and the racing is tightening up. We'd just hoped to have it tightened up sooner so we'll increase penalties next year.
They use a 70 gram penalty for each of the top 3.

Maybe have a starting point weight for all cars at say 1525... then add weight (100, 80, 60) up to a max of say 2000 -2200? Stays on till the end of the points (no diets). ?????????????????????????

I think we just weigh everyones car. That would be their starting weight. Just add to that.

That would be a good starting point given the different chassis
There is I'm sure a large weight difference

If someone wanted to get into this class, what would be a good starting point as far a car?

Really doesn't matter much I don't think. So far XXX-S, TC3, FK05, TA05, FK04..... its slow enough some of the older chassis work great. And if we start with a weight rewards it won't matter much at all.

I'll be there with my TC4, Should be fun, never driven it before. Lucky for me my special pinion came in the mail today. Now I have it geared at 4.028, even though it looks like a paddle wheel.....

I have no idea where I sit at for gearing, but ive got a stocker, so it wont matter.
I havent driven on-road in quite a while either though.

Well its going to be an interesting few weeks sorting out this class. That was cool that Tim took down peoples, weight, gearing, motors, etc so we can look for some trends. I thought it interesting also that the 3 lightest cars were the three fastest with three different types of power. Looks like that might be a place we can even things out... but they were 3 of the better drivers also. It sure is fun though watching those cars run around the track!! Wait I'm supposed to be driving!!

That was a blast! And, they look cool too!! If you have a TC, new or old, that you aren't running, you should try these out!

We have three different combinations running that seem to be really close, 27T/4-cell/open FDR, 17.5 BL/4-cell/4.00 FDR max and Stinger 20T motor/7.4 Lipo/open FDR. Depending on how the Lipo option works out, we may put a FDR limit in place, maybe 6.00-6.30, I'll keep an eye on it and decide. 27T FDRs ranged from 5.50-6.20.

The weights ranged from 1458g to 1577g, average was 1523.6g with only two cars under 1500g. If I take out the lightest and the heaviest, the average weight is 1525g on the money. The USVTA rules use 1450g as the minimum weight but I'm thinking we should raise it to 1500g or 1525g to lessen the penalty to some of the heavier cars we have running. 1525g is what I was thinking to go with so I think that's where we'll start.

As for rewards weight, I'm kind of up in the air alittle bit. I don't think we should go crazy right off the bat, we should start small and learn as we go. I'm thinking 50g to the winner each raceday. I'm not sure how it will work out for those who race both Wednesday and Sunday, we'll see what happens? I'm also unsure on how to add the rewards weight? Should I have weight that I hand out or let the driver add their own? My thinking is to weigh the winning car, add 50g to that number and that is his new minimum weight.

So, the only real change we will make is to raise the minimum weight to 1525g starting Wednesday and we will start with the rewards weight on Sunday. Any comments or other suggestions, let me know.

Tim I was thinking that we could use dumby cells that had lead weights in them and add to batt side of the chassis. Like these from Darkside.

How 'bout we weigh each car at the beginning.... and make EVERYBODY weigh at least what the heaviest car weighs... so everybody starts at an equal weight....?
