Unhappy problem with savage 25

I have a savage 25 with a 2 speed tranny that when I pick the truck up and i accelerate, it shifts fine. When its on the ground it doesn't shift! Does anybody out there have any suggestions on what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

welcome to rc tech.net!
first off, reving the truck without it bieng on the ground can hurt it. second, be more discriptive on what your problem is. is it reving really high, in first, and not shifting? more discriptions will get better , more helpful responses for you!

good luck!

sounds like its not tuned correctly, off the ground there is no load so it will rev easier and thus shift easier, though I hate tuning by a temp gun, what is the temp of the motor after 5 mins or running? You will likely just need to lean out the top end just a tad at a time and keep an eye on temps, try and keep it under 250 degree Farenheit.

dude dont listen to these guyz if ur engine is tuned right dont touch it its got to do with the shift points

did it shift before? if it did and the tranny is pretty old i suggest pulling it apart and checking the 2nd gear carrier that has 2 little knotchesi n it if those knotches are gone buy a new 2 speed clutch

if the tranny is new adjust the 2nd speed shift screw i say turn it out 1/8 of a time untill u can shift wer u want

i know with my 4.6 ss i gotta go around 30 metres or 20 at a real high speed till it kicks in and u can like hear it go wwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa kawa waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhh its pretty good i dont recommend the 3 speed tho that misses 3rd gear alot

newayz man just dont have it off the ground and engage 2nd gear u can screw up the gears and the knotches in the clutch

what all of these guys are saying is true. first never rev it in the air, you take a big risk in snapping the pins in the trans. but i would go with leaning you engine out a lil first to get it to rev a lil higher. i work in a r/c shop and see this all the time. and 8 times out of 10 it can be fixed with just a lil tuning to the engine. if at that point it still will not work that try the screw adj. i have seen it where the spring in the 2 speed clutch get alil mess up and week and then they also wont shift! but just tune it to start!

If I were you I would listen to these guys but never listen too anyone who says 'dont listen to what they are saying'!!. I have a savage 4.6 SS and my mate has a REX-X buggy both having 2 speed tranny's. Neither of them would change into 2nd. It turned out both of them just needed engine tuning. I highly recommend you have your engine running properly b4 u mess with the trans. Good luck

DZL1.
i had the same problem with my savage,it happened when i switched to the lightened gears no matter where i put the shift point it would not shift period

well after screwing with it for 2 weeks i sent it off to HPI,when i finally heard back from them they told me i had the second gear locked down

so when i get it back imm looking it over and for some reason something is bothering me about the way the gear box looks,so i start to take it apart and the it hits me the had the tranny out of the truck.

all the scews have been loctited in(TIGHT) i left them loose while i was testing different setting,so when i get the tranny out all the screws in the case are loc tited also????
i open it up and look at the clutch assy. for the 2 speed and low and behold its ALL new they didnt fix it the just replaced it all and threw it back together.

i was only upset they didnt tell me the truth but it did fix the problem as it shifted great after that

WOW!!!!! Such an angry person?????

No reason to call someone you don't know a dumbazz.

I would also suggest to try to lean the engine for more power on the top end.
If that doesn't work then set it back to where it was and proceed to
check the tranny for problems.

Why take the long way around. Eliminate the simple possibilities first and then tackle the larger.

Good luck with it.

ProudSavageOwnr: i would watch what you say about people on here. and consdering i have been running cars for over 6 years and have seen this problem alot i have ideas on how it works! plus thats what HPI told me to do when i called them about this problem one time. even traxxas will tell you this. i short i would not go around calling people names like you have cuz in the long run its only going to hurt your credability! and farther more if you have a coment like that to be said it should be done by a PM!

P.s. im sorry to here that the guys at you local hobby store must not like you! but its not hard to see why!

WOW! what a dumA$$! Dude if you knew anything about nitro, which you obviously DON'T you would know if the tranny will shift in the air and not on the ground is is most likely way too rich. ( A tuning problem ) You might want to learn a little about the hobby before you run your mouth, and look like a fool.

if the transmission is shifting in the air but not on the ground your slipper clutch is probly slipping to much when it is "under a load condition" (the reason it wont shift on the ground)check your slipper clutch settings and also look to see if the pad is all glazed over..if it is rough it up with some sand paper..I WORK AT A LHS AND THE GUY WHO REFERRED TO ME AS A DUMBASS DIDNT KNOW THIS?..WHATS THAT TELL US? stay away from your shift point settings and mixture settings until you address the slipper clutch..I am pretty confident that will be your culpret.

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to help me out with your suggestions. I will never run the truck off the ground again. Thanks again.
