Wanting a MT
#1
I'm interested in getting a MT (1/10 scale).
I use my buddy's Traxxas Bigfoot and absolutely love it. I'm not into track times, just try to make the jumps and take turns on 2 wheels without flipping. I plan to eventually take it to the beach once I get my own.
I was thinking of getting the Bigfoot as it's only $199 brand new RTR.
The lhs guy told me about the Arrma Granite for $169.99 with better rear axles (metal vs plastic) and even suggested the $249.99 BLX model for a brushless system.
I've also seen the Traxxas Stampede VXL 4x4 that I wouldn't buy new but might get used.
I don't want to invest a lot after the initial purchase. I know I'll likely upgrade some things here and there but my money is mainly spent on my b5m.
Suggestions? Thoughts? My MAX budget is that $249 BLX which I would likely seek used to keep my MAX closer to the $199 area.

And the BigSquidRC review of the granite give it decent ratings with jumping and handling abilities. Though it is 2wd so you're gonna be learning some throttle control when that rear end starts swinging

personally out of those options, the Granite would be my choice for a basher. The Stampede is a pretty good basher too but I feel like the drivetrain upgrades for hard brushless bashing make it less worth while.

BigSquidRC is new to me, I"ll be looking that up. I'm actually used to the 2wd BigFoot and like the challenge. Then again, I've not ever driven a 4x4 RC vehicle. Maybe I'll love it in a MT. I'm going to keep scouring ebay / here / craigslist for used ones. Thanks for your input!
And I'm pretty keen on 2wd myself so I wouldn't count it out either. The 4wd trucks are definitely different animals, but I enjoy roosting and going sideways a bit when I'm in the loose stuff with a 2wd

I'm really thinking for the sandy conditions of FL outdoors, the 4x4 will be a better buy. We don't have any outdoor dirt tracks anywhere near me, unfortunately.
It will undoubtedly end up at the beach and I"ll be building some jumps down by the water

I think I'm going to keep my eye out for the Stampede VXL 4x4

4X4 isnt necessarily better in sand - 2WD can and does work great in sand, it's all about what tires you have. Also, if you're just running around bashing and stuff, you don't REALLY need the brushless system - I just replaced the brushless system I put in my Bandit with the original VL-5 system, and I am happy as a hog in slop with it. Besides, it's waterproof (well, at least water-resistant LOL... I wouldn't run it on the bottom of the sea)
as well as much cheaper

I'm going to quote myself here, this is the info I gave MongolPete when he was asking about the pede vs arrma.
I have only owned two Arrma cars. A brushed Granite MEGA and a Talion.
I thought the Granite MEGA was junk. Very poor fit, slop everywhere - the worst was over a half inch of play in the steering. I actually sent it back for a refund.
The Talion was the exact opposite. Very nice, well put together. Fun car to drive.
If you can, check out the brushless MEGA in person first. I don't know where it falls on the spectrum of quality.
I can tell you that we have 5 2wd pedes in our house and they are beaten on HARD. 2 of my kids think its just hilarious to smash them head first into each other. All are factory stock except for RPM bumpers and steering knuckles.

the 4x4 traxxas stuff in the sand will have problems
there gearing will NOT take it.
The center drive shaft plugs up and the sand gets into the pinion spur area and destroys stuff...
Any vehicle in sand is going to be issues but the STEEL drive's of the ARRMA stuff will hold up better.
Remember sand will get into everything at some point so do your maintenance!
