I got a very quick response from TP Power.

We feel sorry about the motor.

We believe that it is caused by the strong vibration of car. And here is our suggestion to fix the motor:

1. Take off the screws and the end bell.
2. Use epoxy glue to stick the end bell with the can.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks,
Best regards.

I finally got the bearing out and without having to remove the bullets from the wires (which would make it easier to work with). I used a piece of wood to support and position the end bell and cut out a square on the edge of the wood for the bearing to fall into. Then I used my wife's hair dryer to heat up the aluminum end bell housing. Then I hammered on a 1/4" socket to push on the inner race of the bearing and out she came. The bearing size is 8x16x5.

What are the recommended bearings for a motor?

I'm not sure, but ceramic might work well.

"we suggest that you maintain them with oil or grease every half-gallon to a gallon for the longest life possible."

I won't ever be able to replace the bearings again since I'll be closing the end bell forever. I run Avid bearings everywhere else on the truggy but I don't think it's a good idea to run cheap bearings on the motor. How about these from Boca? They're $11.95 each.

http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-...16x5-SMR688UU7

"Stainless Steel, Ultra Sealed, ABEC 7, Secret Weapon bearings are specially designed for use with electric motor, RC vehicles but can be used in almost any application. The Ultra Seal is a non-contact, frictionless seal that is placed beneath the metal shields so they are still considered maintenance free and lubed for the life of the bearing. These bearings have stainless steel races, balls and retainers. Bearings that are packed in grease will require a short break in period to loosen up."

I'm not sure what bearings are considered the best, but I definitely wouldn't go cheap either. It appears the the maintenance Avid suggest is only for ceramic bearings.

Going to the other side now. The front bearing was only inside the housing by 1-2mm (inside section), instead of 5mm. It looks like the rotor managed to push itself towards the back of the motor and caused the end bell to push out. So once I jb weld the end bell back on forever, this shouldn't happen again. I just won't be able to replace the bearings.

I once read a post by Castle not to use ceramic bearings in motors. They only use shielded bearings and recommend a similar high quality replacement. I like the sound of the Boca description you posted.

Motor update

I attempted to install an old bearing in the end bell for practice and it didn't turn out well. It just didn't want to go in, you cannot install these with simple hand tools. I ended up bending the end bell slightly trying to get it in. So I contacted TP Power about all these issues and they're going to drill new holes in the can so the end bell can be properly tightened down, replace the end bell, and install new bearings. I just have to pay for shipping and the bearings, that works. This whole process will probably take over a month and I don't have any back up motors to use, so I've got a new different motor coming soon.

Awesome Overkill! I always wanted to see more about these motors. Probably you could get it naked and show some pics from the inside.
I am interested in a comparison of both motors.

I have changed the bearings of my TP, rear endbell was tricky but it worked, very tight fit. Pretty different is the bearing in the frontbell, as it sits in there kinda loose.

I haven't tried replacing the front bearing just yet.

The motor comes with 8mm bullets and I didn't want to remove them and if I go with the Mamba XL X in the future, it uses 8mm as well. I actually had the XL X on order but cancelled it because I needed a new motor instead and Castle keeps delaying the release date. So I made these 8mm to 6.5mm bullet adapters.

Just put the motor in, ready to rock.
