Muggy vs Hellfire
I have been wanting to get a HPI Hellfire to add to my mostly HPI collection for some time now but have not had the $$. Thanks to my employer withholding extra taxes I have received a moderate tax return and guess what I am going to buy... That was until I stumbled upon this vehicle called Muggy be Team Losi. I grew to like it because it is different than everything else. Here is where I need the help of my friends on RCTech...
Which one is the better basher? I am into the big jumps and high speeds on asphalt and dirt. I have 2 monster trucks and a Firestorm already and want a 4WD truggy. I like the quality of the HPI brand and haven't had any experience with Losi. My LHS stock some of each brands parts but I normally have to order parts anyway so that isn't a factor. Does anyone have any horror/awesome stories or experiences with either of these trucks that might help me make up my mind? I am going to be buying used, trying to stay under the $300 mark and don't have the money for an 8t or mbxt. If anyone has any other models that might stack up with these 2 that are really similar that I haven't mentioned already let me know so I can check them out. If you have a Muggy or Hellfire that you may be interested in selling send me a pm. Thanks in advance, Uhgg |
i just got my hellfire and i can tell you its more of a racer then a basher...i have had 2 losi MT's which the muggy is based from and if you just want it for bashing then the losi is going to be your best bet...they are very strong trucks..and can be made very fast too but thats just my 2 cents

Set it up right and the Muggy will out bash the Hellfire by a pretty wide margin .
The Hellfire was built to race and wont be nearly as strong as the Muggy ... |
Buy a used mugen MBX5T...its way better then either machine mentioned, way tougher and way better performing.....

Go for the muggy bro. It dose share a lot of parts with the lst line and if you do decide you wanna hit the truck you can with no prob

The Mugen looks like a great rig, however, it is a cutting edge racing Truggy. The kit alone is $530! No motor, servos, TX or RX. This guy stated he is not in the market for blowing huge dough. He wants a basher rig. I don't own a Muggy however, I own an LST2 which the Muggy shares many parts with. I hammer the snot out of that truck and it keeps asking for more. Everytime I run it I am on a quest to break it. You can still buy a Muggy new, some sites have them for around $530 RTR. I am even considering one now that you bring it up. I am so impressed with the ruggedness of the LST2 that a Muggy would be sweet. Check this video out of my giving my truck a fair beating today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgjKY0XYrcQ
truggies are much tougher then MT's...here is a video of what we do to the Truggies all summer long...this jump shoots us 10 feet high with a 45 foot travel distance landing on rock hard ground... a truggy will do this over and over without breaking, a MT will not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYOOtBO2mtU |
First I gotta say, you're truggy rips and that is a hell of durability test. I am impressed. Second, if you watched my video you would see I punished my MT all day and nothing happened to it. My jumps was not to far off from yours and I was landing on ice most of the time. I have a Savage Flux, it is designed to take a beating and it sure does! Savages are great bashers. Truggies are no joke though, I will give you that. They do have low ground clearance compared to the MT's, that concerns me a little.

I wouldn't even recommend a Hellfire for sitting on a shelf, the most fragile and unreliable truggy ever made.
The muggy is better but suffers under high gearing(kills clutch shoes) and massive weight. I would listen to Maximo on this one. If I weren't so heavily into Losi I would be running Mugen. |
isn't the muggy discontinued?
i had my eye on it for a while too but it's not on the losi site anymore. might get lucky and find one in stock somewhere. but hands down most poeple break their hellfire because it's just soo darn FAST! it is a pure bread racer. lots of metal hop ups if you tend to break a certain part depending on your bashing/ crash landing habits . i am putting payments down now and i'm on the fence between hell fire ( that i aslo want since my first hpi ) and the new ten -t, mostly because i need a new telemtry transmitter.. mines almost full of models! lol |
You are in a sticky spot. You can pick up a rtr hellfire for around 300 nib if you hunt around on the bay. I have friends with both. Neither seem to last a full day of bashing. The muggy is trying to be a truggy on a mt platform and it just doesn't work well. as said above runs through CB's like water. The hellfire well I love it but for my money I would go with a D8T if you want to stay in the HPI family if not xray makes the best stuff out there imo. Also don't forget buggy's they are tough as nails and we bash them as hard as anything 20 feet in the air all day long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frUSeOif2_c My savage and my buddies 8 As you are buying used you will be able to find just about anything you want for under 300. I do recomend that what ever you get buy it as a roller and invest the money you save plus a few extra bucks into a NIB motor. buying used motors is like play russian reulet with a fully loaded revolver it always ends with a headache. Best of luck man. |

IMHO its the best value in RC right now...... I used to have a Hellfire and it was a huge headache, it just is not built with anywhere near the quality of todays modern Truggies...it didn't perform bad when it was running, but it was not overly durable, the diffs are very weak, and the plastics were prone to breakage......It was fun to drive and gives you a taste of what a Truggy can do, but as soon as you start to push it, things start breaking........ As I say, if you want the most bullet proof machine get yourself a Mugen...Japanese built, extremely high grade materials, awesome performance.. And durable as all hell.. you can beat the snot out of a Mugen and it will keep on ticking..... I run Mugen's and it has nothing to do with the elite brand name at all, it has to do with the fact they make the most durable Buggies and Truggies on the market and I can push the Mugens harder without breaking then any other RC I have run.......I also love X-Ray, but I don't find the X-Ray Truggy to be as durable as the Mugen's, the X-Ray Buggy is pretty much bomb proof tho, but we haven't seen the same in Truggy so far....believe it or not but we killed the diffs a few times in the XT8 this season..And diffs are not something I like to mess with, if a machine has weak diffs I want no part of it...... |
