Default E-maxx 3906 with EVX-2 16.8 motor problems

So Im recently getting back into RC, had a RC10T2 and a Rustler years ago. Now I purchased an older E-maxx 3906 with a few upgrades. It has an EVX-2 16.8V ESC, had 2x HPI GT550 motors , 2075 steering servo, stock 2 speed trans and 22/66 gearing. And I run 3300 8.4v packs with deans. I upgraded to Tmaxx 3.3 shafts, Traxxas center CVDs, and wheelie bar. I have about 10 runs on it.

So my problem is that Ive gone through a bunch of motors in the few months Ive had it and am starting to get sick of buying these titan 550s. Ive gone through 2 GT550s (came with truck) and 4 titan 550s now. I went down to 20T pinions and put heatsinks on the motors and same problem. I bought a new titan 550 on ebay because the brushes in one decieded to fly out, and its different than my current motors, it does not say 14V on it, and the label is darker than the other titan 550s I was getting. Anyways I was putting the new titan 550 on and adjusting gears and breaking it in and on a test on the bench it doesnt sound like the motors are turning correctly together. When I run just the original titan it sounds normal, but anytime I use the new motor it sounds different, almost like a motor is struggling. So is this new titan that doesnt say 14V on it different than the older titan that does say 14V. And would I have to buy another motor to match the mismatched ones I have?

Also been thinking of just going to a Titan 775 since I have an EVX-2 already and the titan 775 comes stock on the TRA Summit, but don't know if my transmission could handle it and If I should upgrade some gears. Im kinda leaning towards the titan 775 with upgraded gears, but would like to get the titan 550s working for now cause I have them here, and it would take a week or 2 to get a titan 775 and the parts I'd need.
I can post pics if it would help.
Thanks in advance.

not without melting the tranny...

the 14.4v motors are the "old" style(23t) that came with the first e-maxx when it was released, when they put the yellow evx2 in it they upgraded to a "new" motor(21t)

I would suguest picking up a set of the new e-maxx motors from ebay and see if your still having problems...

IDK how tech savvy you are, but the dewaly 12v XRP motor is only $30, but you need to mod the motor plate

PS: don't get the e-revo motors, one is a reverse rotation only.

go brushless if you want, but be prepaired to spend $$ on tranys, diffs, and driveshafts, even on my 3905 maxx I still go through driveshafts, and there twice the size

I would rather not go brushless at this time, as I have the older 3906 tranny, and I also have a brushless Rustler for my speed addiction. I have upgraded the driveshafts to the Revo-spec axel shafts and CVDs on the centers.

I guess I'll just try to get another of the newer Titan 550s or maybe 2 so I know they will match without the 14v on the label and hopefully it work good and then i'll just have a spare motor.

Im still debating on goin to the titan 775, but don't know if i would need to upgrade the tranny.

thats because those are completely made up for the BL systems with a metal tranny, cvds, etc.... The e-maxx is not.

I have the older 3906 with the older 2-speed trans, that is not brushless ready. Could I drop in one of the BL ready trans from a newer E-maxx, or would it be better to just upgrade my current trans with metal gears since I would like to keep the 2-speed trans setup, and the newer trans is only 1-speed from the factory. Thanks for all your help.
