Rock crawler/mud runner

I was thinking about starting a project, here's what I have in mind....Something I can take though masive amounts of mud, and go over big obsticals, and I want it to be eletric. I just don't know what I can get to start out with....any sugjestions?

there are plenty of options for this most are Tamiya trucks
1. Clod Buster
The stock truck is fun but not very worthy so most people mod the heck out of them and the only stock part is the axles with a 4 link set up.
2. TXT-1/Juggernaut
More capable but again most people mod them and only use the tranny(Sometimes swapped out for something more durable) and the axles.
3. High lift/Bruiser/Hilux
These are more for realism but are also capable of all kinds of mods and what not to make them work really well for mudding and crawling.
4. HPI wheely kind
And many others

I can't aford the bruiser, thoughs things are very expencive. I know I do want to make a tube chassis, so I was thinking something like a clodbuster. Thank's for the help.

If you know ahead of time your going to make a tube chassis, skip buying the whole clod and just buy the axles, unless you want to run the stock wheels and tires.
Even if you cant afford a bruiser Tamiya is released a High Lift(similar to a Bruiser) with a Toyota Hilux body, and has already released one with an F350 body. They are not cheap but they are also not nearly as pricey as the vintage trucks are.

Where can I find axles for the clod?, and are they any good?

If you only want to use one motor than you can use the axles form a TXT-1/Juggernaut, a TLT-1, HPI wheely King, or Tamiya High Lift.
You will also need to get a tranny as well, a lot of the custom builders us a Stampede tranny, with tmaxx or revo drivesafts.
You can find everything you need on ebay, thundertech sells axles by themselves as well as other sites like rc4wd.com.
Im not sure if buying it all separate will save you much money, but you wont have any extra parts that your not using.

Don't bother with any of that complicated stuff.Buy the Axial ax10 and call it a day.Why spend close to 400.00 in parts when you can buy an axial for 239.99 and it has the instruction on how to put it together.There will be some Tube chassis available really soon for the axial too.

I just thought it would be fun to fabicate my own chasiss. Plus I was thinking about something that look kinda real too, but I could save alot of time and money going the other way.

Listen i'm more of a nitro freak, but i was in the same boat as you. building your own, Well i started with a 1/18th scale nylint, ripped everything out except for the front and rear, got some info from rccrawler.com, and i started my build... I was going stick chassis, progress came along awesome until i saw the axial ax-10 and the price of it.... Well i calculated what i needed yet, how long until i could actually crawl, and how reliable it was gonna be... My decision:
I ordered a axial rock crawler... But downfall is the g/f is buying it and i can't drive it till christmas... lol

I have an HPI Wheely King, and I love it. I stretched the wheelbase 2" with custom-made links, using Revo rod ends, and Traxxas E-maxx shafts. Then I added a Multiplex 600 motor, and locked the rear diff. It crawls great, is about twice as fast as stock. (ditch the crappy battery that's included and get yourself a good NiMh batt.) and as for mud, well... I'll let the pics speak for themselves.


Btw, here's the stock, out-of the-box crawling ability:

I have about an extra $65 in it, and I LOVE IT! I've beaten the SNOT out of this thing, including lots of high-speed jumping (several times off my porch, nose-first landing) and so far I've broken 1 lower link mount, the front upper link mount is pretty messed up, and I bent one axle shaft. The weak points are as follows: Upper link mount, upper y-link, rear steer lock-out, servo-saver, ESC. that's about it.
Plus the WK is RTR, the AX10 needs assembly, plus electrics and radio to go. (there's another $150 easy.) The WK you can up-grade as you go.
