Help me choose an MT!
#1
Hi all, I can't decide which MT to get. Available at my LHS is the following:
ARRMA Granite
ARRMA Big Rock
Axial SMT10 kit
HPI Wheely King
MST MTX-1 4WD kit
Tamiya Monster Beetle Trail
I'm running this across fields mostly, maybe an occasional skate park.
I'm new to MT, but but not r/c.
Does anyone have any experiences of the above?

Wheelie-ing, gambolling across the field, sliding it about and jumping off the natural jumps there. (the field is not flat, there is a part that can be used as a jump as it transitions to a higher field.

Then definitely not the Monster Beetle Trail, might want to stretch and up the power on a Wheely King for that and something similar for the SMT-10, not familiar enough with the Arrmas and the MST to have much advice. Depending on the budget, I’d even consider a Stampede.

I don't mess with Traxxas generally. Not easy to get parts here.
I did think the Monster beetle was a little low on clearance. The Wheely King and SMT10 seem very old, that's all, So I am worried about parts and overall toughness. I do have existing electronics that are very powerful, so power isn't an issue.
The ARRMA and MST are a bit newer, so hopefully stronger.

I’ve got a Monster Beetle Trail that is being converted into a 4wd Wild Willys, but minus the Portals, since those went on my MF-01x Suzuki Jimny trail rig and it’s just a wheelie machine with stock electronics and a 5000mAh NiMH stick pack through Tamiya plugs.
I’ve also got a couple modded Wheely Kings and one is still a monster truck and I do not recommend a a Traxxas Velineon on 3S, with the mods I’ve done it will handle the power, but stand straight up when you think about getting into it. I’m thinking about flipping the chassis Crawler King style again (battery in the front) with a Castle Sidewinder SCT and 3800 combo on 2s and maybe some CPE swaybars.
Don’t have a SMT yet, but I think a combo comparable to what I want to stick in my WK would be wise and it would probably be better suited to what you want to do out of the box than a WK is. Though you might look into one of Axial’s Bombers as well, I’d probably get one of those before the SMT or WK if I wanted something to beat on like I do my Stampede, but with Solid Axles.
The MST and ARRMA trucks, I just don’t know I don’t know much on the MSTs and my experience with the ARRMA trucks goes back 5 years to the early trucks and I hated wrenching on the 2wd ones just due to all the screws you needed to take out to do simple work on them, haven’t had to work on any of the newer ones since I no longer work in a hobby shop.

^Thanks, I'm strictly sticking to 2s as I don't want to spend more money on batts. I am considering the WK and MST, but I'll have to go down to an LHS to look at the ARRMAs. Axials IME tend to be hard to sell on IME, plus once you buy the kit version and the tyres, wheels, shell, servo, it's gonna be expensive.....

^I'm in Asia, so Traxxas is difficult and anything Horizon is very overpriced. Japanese/Taiwanese stuff is easily available though, as is European stuff and AE. The ARRMAs happen to be on sale recently.....

I think you are missing 2 other trucks. Team Associated Rival MT10 and the Redcat RCMT10E/Team Magic E5. The Arrmas are also a good choice. I'd avoid the HPI, MST, and the Tamiya just because of durability and/or parts support. I'd also like to add that RPM now makes arms for the AE Rival MT10. Ultimately, the choice is yours.

^I do have the opportunity to buy a used MT10 at a very good price. (Actually, that was what started the whole thread)
Redcat and Team Magic have non-existent parts support where I'm at, but there's loads of Tamiya and HPI.
I did look at a ARRMA Granite yesterday, very tempting. Reminds me of the OG mentalist MT, the Savage XS.

I have a fairly new basher type truggy for sale in the classifieds. It's a Team corally Muraco XP 6S I just bought at the end of April or may 1st I think. I wanted to get into racing and didn't know what I was doing(my local track only does 1/10). I have a 6s setup (2×3s) and a big 4s I'm selling with it. The chassis is exactly the same as there Kronos MT and you can swap the MT wheels(they are an option part for this truck) It rips(70mph out the box on 6S) and parts availability is great if you don't mind ordering. I get my parts from RC Hobby Explosion and the come in 3 days. Also eurorc and team corallys on site always have parts in stock.

Hello,
Hope you are well.
For runs in grass fields you want a big truck, at least 1/8th scale, with good ground clearance and 4 wheel drive. I would recommend an Arrma Kraton 1/8 6S 4WD BLX. Smaller trucks tend to overheat in long grass runs. Of course you can compensate for overheating by gearing down until the heat is reduced. For $569 the Kraton is hard to beat. Avoid 1/10 and smaller for long runs on grass fields.

Tony

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd ride on this one's coat tails.
I hope you don't mind Sir 5id3ways, if you do I'll start another thread. I'm looking at getting a solid axle MT and trying to decide between the Clodbuster, SMT-10 and LMT. I'm thinking I want to build something to fit in the PRO-MOD rules on Triggerkingrc.com. There is no racing of this style in my neck of the woods, but I'm hoping to get something started and maybe even travel to a Trigger king event. Anybody here have any experience with these vehicles and this type event? I'm kinda surprised this style of MT racing doesn't get discussed on here at all.

^Get your own damn thread foo'
j/k stick around if you want lol.
Actually I already made a decision. I bought an EB48SL with a 550 sensored SCT system. I'm waiting for some MT wheels and tyres to arrive from AMain to make it into a sort of an MT....
As for solid axle MT, SMT10 sounds good provided you don't push it too hard. LMT is good as well, but requires it's own rims and don't go full tony hawks....
